Rob_D Posted June 25, 2020 Author Posted June 25, 2020 They have definitely improved it, but what sort of company runs its service with such big gaping holes for so long. The sort that was probably 2 guys operating out of a garden shed back in March and didn't expect to gain world acclaim\infamy so quickly. We tried to push people to Teams rather than Zoom (especially after all the hacking/Zoombombing came out in the news) but between the head refusing to move away from Zoom, the constant rebuttal of "but XYZ use it, so it must be fine" and staff using it anyway, I've given up fighting that battle and let them get on with it. Sorry, that got a touch more ranty than I was expecting.
nathan Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 One focused on growth. It worked, too! They certainly grew, but they even exaggerated that to an extent. https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/30/21242421/zoom-300-million-users-incorrect-meeting-participants-statement
mavhc Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 Also I know how to use Meet to a degree, Zoom i don't have a clue, who is going to administer it, who is going to support it? Have you had training in Zoom? Whose going to review the settings to make them safeguarding appropriate? This sort of stuff needs to stop in schools, How did you learn to use Meet?
paulkerton Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 How did you learn to use Meet? Ahh the master of contrarianism returns. The point is, regardless, that it is not for people to suddenly decide that they want to use a service, and then start using it willy nilly. No consideration to any of the configuration, management and GDPR requirements that are needed by law.
Cw2k Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 One thing to watch out for with free zoom is the recordings, they are stored locally on the meeting organisers or participants device if they start a recording unless the organiser overrides the setting which most don’t bother doing. If you have the edu account you can pull in all account inc the free ones that use your email domain and enforce the settings to prevent things like this (enforced settings work with both basic and licensed users)
jthompson Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 I registered our domain with them for edu, so I'll take a closer look at enforced settings in that case.

I've not seen any sort of domain management console on the free versions.
keyboards Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 How did you learn to use Meet? By using it myself, testing it, reading google supports, passing the google courses, then I was confident enough to enable it for others and support. Zoom I have no clue bar being in a few quizzes, also Meet is internal in our G-suite, Zoom is a completely stand-alone product of which I don't the GDPR, recently the security exploits, I have no clue how to administer it or really what the functions are, if someone hits a problem I'm basically as good as them whereas with Meet I might an idea.
Cw2k Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 Do you need a paid-for edu account for this? I've not seen any sort of domain management console on the free versions. Needs the paid edu accounts so around £1700 inc vat per year for the 20 host versions (20 licensed, unlimited basic) You can do sso and enforce signin using sso so make use of your existing mfa setup. By default it still allows them to sign in with their old password from before they got added to the accounting but they be turned off to prevent bypassing of mfa. The usage dashboard will show you reports for basic and licensed users and allow you to jump in and support active meetings.
JoeRogue Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 I have signed up for the edu version to test it out. We have been using Google Meet during lockdown and its worked fine, the only annoying thing is we want to stream a meeting next week as 'view-only' for participants. Meet can stream but only to people within your organisation. Might have to bite the bullet and get a Zoom license.
nathan Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 If people are looking for video conferencing platform, you could try Jitsi - never used it though. It's open source, perhaps install it on a digital ocean VPS with a gigabit Jitsu.org On a side note, do others also see Zoom as a different product category to Teams with the latter being about collaboration and Zoom just a video conf platform
howartp Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 We've got 9 Zoom Pro licenses under one account, locked down, plus one large-meeting addon for Staff Meetings. Opened a ticket re the Education account 3 weeks ago and keep getting "thanks for your ticket, we're really busy and will get back to you" auto replies... Only real issue we have is not being able to preemptively stop Cameras before they're turned on. You can stop mics before you admit students, and you can stop camera once they start it (which prevents them re-starting it) but can't stop cameras up front. Local recording is blocked but forced to record on cloud, and hosts can't delete their own recordings.
howartp Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 On a side note, do others also see Zoom as a different product category to Teams with the latter being about collaboration and Zoom just a video conf platform I've spent 10-12 hours this week training one of my new church treasurers by Zoom, with my 2nd monitor shared so we can work on spreadsheets and PDF reports/statements. Would never have happened pre-covid as we couldn't have got together that much.

BlueSkies Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 I've just been asked if we can start using Zoom instead of Teams - as the people who organise the meetings seem to be having lots of trouble when trying to get external attendees into Teams meeting. And there are apparently bits of functionality missing when joining the Teams meeting as a guest (unable to join in with the Chat function is one of them). I know at the beginning of lockdown, using Zoom was a no-no ... but from reading this thread, it seems as though things have changed slightly. Although, we have Teams and I would prefer to stick to using it! I am struggling to combat the tide of favour for Zoom! The meetings are for staff, so no pupils would be involved.
jthompson Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 All good until they want to carry on having meetings after Zoom has ended its freebie.
LeMarchand Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 (edited) I've just been asked if we can start using Zoom instead of Teams - as the people who organise the meetings seem to be having lots of trouble when trying to get external attendees into Teams meeting. And there are apparently bits of functionality missing when joining the Teams meeting as a guest (unable to join in with the Chat function is one of them). I've just had cause to be in the Teams admin interface - you should be able to allow guest access to chats: I suspect it's more a case of "We wanna use Zoom" though. Edited July 7, 2020 by LeMarchand
CAWJames Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 We use Teams predominantly, but have the "free" edu Zoom, I applied for it early on for the domain, but never used it. We are currently integrating BigBlueButton into our Moodle for remote teaching, and so far it looks like it has come on leaps and bounds from the 0.x version I was testing 8 or so years ago. chucked a large dual 10 core Xeon bare metal server at it with 64GB of RAM, that will do them! We have been doing large tests with 80+ students, and it should handle a hell of a lot more. It can also do as many camera feeds as your hardware and bandwidth will allow. Although we don't tend to turn everyones camera on.
LeMarchand Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 If you have the right sort of head, I have found a way to get them to switch to Teams over Zoom: Get them to accept a "test" meeting with you whilst in the same room and have a suitable background ready to go and watch their minds get blown. One of mine is now switching to Teams because he can be in his X-Wing whilst in a meeting by just choosing an appropriate picture . Other backgrounds are available. 2
paulkerton Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Doesn't zoom do backgrounds too though? Zoom does it, Microsoft does it. Google have announced it's coming to Meet in Q3. In fact, the event tomorrow is going to make the features and where they lie between free and Enterprise clearer. EduGeek.net - Google Meet Roadmap Webinar - 15th July at 12:30pm
LeMarchand Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Doesn't zoom do backgrounds too though? According to the chap in question, it involves your own greenscreen. Teams is all in the software. Edit: Never used Zoom, nor likely to, so taking his word for it.
tg12 Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Zoom can do backgrounds without a green screen. I’ve done it a few times on personal calls with it.
LeMarchand Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Zoom can do backgrounds without a green screen. I’ve done it a few times on personal calls with it. Not according to this guy, and I wasn't going to tell him otherwise! 1
mavhc Posted July 16, 2020 Posted July 16, 2020 Zoom depends on what your cpu and gpu are though, and Teams doesn't like it if you have a low res webcam Meanwhile google was doing all this about 7 years ago, and then stopped because they switched from NaCl to WebRTC
