Does anyone know if its possible to stream video of live lessons in Microsoft Teams for edu?

I know its possible in normal teams to have video meetings but I can't find the option in Edu version. Am I missing something?

Worked it out! very hidden.

EDIT: surprisingly it works on the web version as well. Very cool for online teaching during virus outbreaks!!

Today we ran our first remote lesson and it worked rather well! Here's some tips for teachers:

  • Teachers should use headphones when running live lessons to prevent an echo on the sound. Sound from the laptops is very clear once that’s done.

  • We’ve found that Audio + PowerPoint with Microsoft Whiteboard in the background is a great combination. Students can ask questions via the chat feature.

  • Class chat is useful but perhaps better to ask questions at the end of the presentation rather than during.

  • Live video seems a bit pointless and is a little distracting, teachers can turn this off and just speak over the PowerPoint

  • Drawing on a tablet device is very effective.

  • Headphones and a microphone to help teachers.

  • Teachers should upload PowerPoints, resources and tasks BEFORE the lesson to prevent delays at the start.

  • Use Microsoft whiteboard to announcing things such as breaks.

Don't have anything unprofessional in the back ground!

Was watching a live feature on Facebook yesterday and on a radiator was underwear!

"Advanced" features such as sharing videos didn't work in the web version for us. Needed to d/l the desktop version for that ;)

From watching the lesson at the back of the room, it was pretty clear to me that the video side of things didn't add very much. I'll be advising teachers to just use Audio over their slides.

We were sending DVD movie clips over it for the class to work with.

Looking into this now. Have been using Google Classroom but the live streaming feature of Teams seems particularly interesting.

With regards permissions... it seems allowing or disallowing student access is pretty minimal. Ideally would like them to be able to pose questions during a live stream, but not necessarily upload their own video, stream etc. Can't seem to find the happy medium between these. Has anyone found a balance?

We tested Teams today with me in an Office and my class of 25 in another room - It was ok. This was using the web client.

What we would like is a way of not allowing the pupils to use video. Allow the teacher but not the kids. We don't want anything dodgy from the kids - or insights into their rooms etc.

Just use the chat feature on the right hand side?

Yeh the lesson management side of things is unknown at the moment, i'm not sure how you mute all the people watching either yet.

Chat feature doesn't work unless you give anyone the ability to post messages... if you do that students can post pretty much anything to the class...

Is that right or have I missed something in the setup. Entirely possible as I have just spent a few minutes hurriedly setting up a test site.

We have chat enabled on the main class, works well here.

Students can ask questions during a live broadcast, the teacher tends to answer these questions at the end.

Students just need to get used to online learning like anyone else, normal classroom management should still apply when using chat and making sure the students behave. Its no different than them talking in class without permission.

We have the 'Chat' tab disabled for students but if they're a member of a team you can put messages in the 'Conversations' area which is viewable to everyone in the class. Much the same way it would be if they put their hand up in class.

I do agree however that ideally Teams needs a features to mute all attendees in a meeting by default. There is a 'Mute All' option in the participants area but students can unmute themselves. However it starts to become a classroom behaviour issue just as it would be talking over someone in class.

All this is only going to be 'Best effort' when your having to try and continue as normal when school is closed.

Sorry... probably not making myself clear, and seems increasingly likely I have it setup incorrectly.

Fine with students having chat enabled during a live broadcast. No issues with them discussing idea's, in fact I am all for it. My issue it seems that to unlock this students have to have the ability to be able to add any other kind of resources to the team in general (files, resources, even live video) as if they were a teacher. For info we have been testing with using a class code... I am wondering if this does not account for the teacher / student permissions as if adding manually.

Microsoft have created an online space for discussing tips and trick for using Teams in this context. The Education team, a VP and the software engineers are all actively engaging with techies and educators it to provide quick help and better understand our needs.

Have you assigned the policies to your users? There is a teacher policy and a student policy which has different settings.

I posted a powershell script to assigned the relevant policies to users based on AD Groups

I know this started as a Teams thread, so hopefully helpful and not off topic. GoogleforEdu twitter have pointed GSuite users to https://www.blog.google/outreach-initiatives/education/distancelearning-covid19

GSuite has Hangouts Meet of course.

Shouldn't it already apply the policies via the Faculty or Student licensing when the user is created?

As we've been discussing this on the Google equivalent, what are the safeguarding implications of using this? Are all Team meetings automatically recorded in case a student makes a complaint?

Are all lessons in the IRL classrooms recorded in case someone makes a complaint?

Most real life lessons wouldn't take place in a student's bedroom.

It's absolutely vital that we discuss the potential implications without snark and sarcasm.

All it takes is one complaint from a malicious child that teacher did something on camera, and without the evidence to protect them, goodbye career.
