Sonic007 Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 I'm finding contradicting information about what fine and points I will get. Anyone know what it will be? I was doing 43 in a 30 zone.... Some sites say I'l get 3 points and £100 fine. Cant do Speed aware course as its over the set speed. Some other sites say I'l be in band "B" and charged 75-125% of one weeks salary and 4-6 points. There are lots of sites saying the salary fine but the gov one says fixed £100 Any ideas? cheers.
woodham Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 naughty naughty if they just sent a letter of intent then its quite likely it will just be 3 points and fine 1
Sonic007 Posted February 13, 2020 Author Posted February 13, 2020 Thanks, I blooming hope so. I've never broken the law in my life and quite frankly it's not like I was doing 90mph, but fair enough I know it was wrong. Im hoping its just the £100 and 3 points. To top it off Im skint this month! Arghhhh!
woodham Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 imho its worse speeding at the bottom end so 30mph and 20mph limits as these are usually in built up areas , kids about etc. Drive like a saint in those and thrash it on open motorway or my own private racetrack (says the man who might of got caught doing 130 in a 50 stretch of motorway very early one morning a very very long time ago) 1
ZeroHour Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Yeah I suspect 3 points, we dont have the speed awareness course in Scotland but I thought you could do it as long as its only 3 points and you haven't done it in the last 2 or 3 years. 1
LukeRowberry Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Found this but not sure how recent it is. 1
timbo343 Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 (edited) I too think it will be 3 points and a fine. I know someone who was doing 53 in a 40 and they got a driver awareness course. This was in west yorkshire. This site might help https://www.parkers.co.uk/car-advice/speeding-fines/ and this too https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/legal/speed-limit Remember that your speedometer is 10% more than what you are actually doing when comparing to the GPS signal. mikeprice Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Remember that your speedometer is 10% more than what you are actually doing when comparing to the GPS signal. Not always It is normally reading high - but the amount varies but previous cars have been about 10% - so if it says 30 I am probably doing 27-28 current car I am probably doing 28-29 so don;t assume you can do 33 and come out as 30 personally I would check with GPS but drive to the speedo anyway - you may get there 1 minute later - but if that is critical then you really should look at how stretched your life is (says the old retired bloke) 1
Sylv3r Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 I got done doing the exact same speed in a 30 about 8 months ago. 3 points and a £100 fine was what I received - wasn't offered the course as it was over the threshold. 1
FN-GM Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 How do you know you have been caught? You should think yourselves lucky in the UK. A friend of mine here was caught doing 4kph over the limit (2.5mph) and was fined $500 (£250).
Davit2005 Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 There is very little difference between GPS and my speedometer at 30mph. Verified with multiple GPS units and I do have a digital speedometer in my car.

But most importantly you'll get a letter within 14 days saying you were caught with your vehicle details, speed, etc. I got that letter yesterday. It does seem like it will be £100. Blooming expensive still! I was 1mph over being offered a Speed awerness course from what I can see online.

Was it a Static Camera, average speed check or mobile camera?

mavhc Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 My car goes from saying it's at 0mph when stopped, to 2mph, can't make it say 1mph, because it has to over estimate. Going via the signs that flash your speed at you, I'm going at 27mph when it says 30 on my dash
Lonix Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 Usually 3 points, £100 fine, you may need to attend a course or do an online one. All depends what they send you. I'm speaking from experience..... Silly thing that I've not repeated and I paid for it (literally). 1
CAM Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 A speedometer can overstate your speed by up to 10% to account for calibration being slightly off, but cannot understate your speed at all. So it can read 33mph when you are doing 30mph, but not 30mph when you are doing 31mph. Likewise it can read 33mph when you are doing 33mph if calibrated exactly spot on which would mean you are speeding. The prosecution guidelines are generally 10%+2mph but this varies depending on Police force and road. It's simply to prevent the courts being clogged up with excessive speeding prosecutions and account for errors with speed camera calibration. There are some roads such as 50mph temporary restrictions that are set very stringently to protect road workers. 1
dapaulio Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 It has all become confusing and not very well documented. Not to throw daggers as I know how easy it is myself to accidentally break the speed limit but it is all relative now. I have been caught 3 times 48 in a temporary 40 roadworks reduced from 70 34 in a 30 97 in a 70 And my heaviest penalty was in fact the 34 in a 30 (drivers awareness course) and 48 in a 40 because my driving was deemed a direct threat to others safety fined 3 Pts and £100 (dac was unavailable as I had already had one) Whereas I was caught doing 97 on an empty motorway at 2am in the morning you would think that would incur the heaviest fine. Fined 3pts and £60. Tbh I think the police were lenient on me and I am grateful as The police did wag the finger as they cautioned me for speed exceeds 100 would carry an instant ban. They knew my top speed that night wasn’t what they caught me doing Whilst mine was nearly 150% over the limit on a motorway in the middle of the night it was a lower risk (not excusable by my own admission) but as you are travelling nearly 150% speed limit in a 30 the risks are extremely high to other road users and pedestrians regardless of the time of day. I hope they dont throw the towel at you but be prepared for you have to go to court and depending on circumstances you may be given 6pts and a %age of your weekly salary fined. Good luck Can anyone answer this Question... what if you are out of work because any %of £0 = £0. Is there a minimum fine?

Is there a minimum fine?Have been trying to resist weighing in on this, but the way you were dealt with reflects my views on the seriousness of the transgression - and sounds like you've learned your lesson. As you say, it's easy to be pious, but IMO 20 and 30 zones should be most strictly enforced of all. To OP: 43mph in a 30 zone is a lot too fast. Hopefully the £100 is enough to put you off doing it again. It might make you feel better to know that a driver's awareness course isn't free and you'd have to take a day off work to attend, so financially doesn't make that much difference. Unless you've only just got your driving license, 3 points won't make much difference to your insurance premium - but 6 will. You don't need to have your eyes glued to the speedo - having supervised a learner driver quite a lot last year I was pretty much 100% when I suggested they check their speed. I knew when they were doing 33 instead of 30 without being able to see the speedo. Final thought: if you hit a child at 30mph, there's an 80% chance they'll survive. If you hit them at 40mph, there's an 80% chance they'll die. 1
MkII Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 On my route there's a 30 out of a village. No houses but a steep hill out and unfortunately the National Speed Limit sign is part way up the steep hill. Most people take a run up to the hill which can mean you're clocking 45 just before the NSL sign. Grossly unfair and pollution generating IMHO. Of course if the police are there, it's going to be at that precise spot. Luckily I usually start early and finish late so not so lucrative to catch people.
HarryMonkey Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 This site has some useful info about the course. I did one a couple of years back and found it really useful. https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/tips-and-advice/153090/speed-awareness-course-all-you-need-to-know
