Anyone using raid 1 for entire server?

I am getting quotes to replace ageing server. I have had suggestions from Raid 6, Microsoft spaces and surprisingly - to me, raid 1.

 

Does anyone have a complete raid 1 set up on their server please?.

 

Only 1 server, but 2 virtual.

Depends how much storage you need, if it's relatively minimal then RAID 1 will do the job and keep the costs down

Have a few servers at various sites that are purely RAID 1

There's nothing wrong with raid 1 just be aware you'll be wasting 50% of your storage, and storage is generally expensive. Raid 6 is the probably optimum balance between redundancy performance. That being said I still use Raid5 on all SSD arrays to significantly reduce write percentage and increase the each SSD's life (not that I've had one fail..but...).

 

Ps when they say Raid 1 they probably mean raid 10

Yeah, I use RAID 1. I haven't found it to be usual for more than one fail at a time, though once a drive has failed I swap it ASAP. Worst case there is also the backups though.

We used to run RAID 10 on our storage server, back when we had 100GB SSDs. 8 of them forming 800GB, mirrored.

 

These days, we use RAID 6 though for storage.

Depends what you are using it for.

 

If it is a Hyper-visor host and the raid 1 is just for the Local OS then I cannot see a problem.

 

Back in the day I seem to remember different RAIDs on MS Exchange servers like Raid 5 for database files and RAID 1 for database log files but not sure that is relevant with SSDs as was just for performance

Raid 1 - without Raid 0 - is fine for small system - or systems with really big disks

 

but would work fine of you like to have all the files nice and neat on their own separate drives

 

I used it many years ago for the system disk on a big system - systems disk mirrored on on set - non database files on another - then a massive databse striped across 6 other mirrored sets

 

 

 

 

normally I would prefer Raid 5 or 6 - for a server but it depends on the specific needs and wants

 

In my opinion I would make sure that whatever system I used had a good reporting system so that any disk failures would be flagged up immediately

 

nothing worse than a RAID system that has a failed disk that no-one knows about - and if has mirrors you can bet that the next disk that will fail will be the other mirror or the same set

 

Yup - been there done that - the LEA refused to give us control of it or let us see the reports - and didn;t check themselves!

still - only 3 weeks with no computers in the whole school!!!
