We enforce a mailbox retention policy across the trust, so our accounts never get that full as the most that the majority can keep is 1 year's worth (select staff get up to 3 years) Edited by Boredguy

Having a few people hit there mailbox limit and don't/won't delete any emails. What options are there from here?

Backup old emails and delete.

Office 365

Which plan are you using? A lot of them have the option of enabling 100GB limits using powershell, just aren't enabled by default

(Not that a 50Gb size "should" need increasing, but might be easier than arguing if you got the option for free and it isn't using up your network storage etc)

Set-Mailbox "email" -ProhibitSendQuota 99GB -ProhibitSendReceiveQuota 100GB -IssueWarningQuota 98GB

Might be worth a try and see if yours allows it

Depends if you enable the online archive or not.

If you don't, it just moves it to another folder within your mailbox.

Online archive creates a new mailbox that is outside of the 50Gb limit
