iPads and Windows 10

Hi Everyone

 

Just wanted to get some feed back on how others get photo's of iPads in school on Windows 10.

 

We have recently upgraded the whole system to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019.

When we plug in an iPad the system doesn't see the device.

Before it just add it as an additional drive on Windows 7.

Tried installing iTunes on a test machine but still no.

 

The school only wants to get access to the photo's taken.

 

The school doesn't use Meraki or any MDM as they only have a few iPads

 

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Here, we get people to use their school onedrive.

 

At my last school I used dropbox to automatically sync any photos taken with a share on the file server (it also served as a file drop to get documents onto the ipad). All worked pretty well and the size limit in dropbox made them keep the photos organised more.

we use the FileExplorer app on the iPad to upload to a share on the server that teachers have access to from their desktops. This gets them off the ipads and into an area that staff can see them and archive / print as necessary..

there is a paid for version I use at home, but the free one works fine for a single server connection...

We let our staff use iPads to take photos and we use an app called QFile to automatically copy the photos to a network share (which is actually our backup SAN). We then use a script to move the photos from that network share to the staff shared area and it creates folders based on the year, month and day. The script is looped and uses a scheduled task to run even when nobody is logged in. So photos taken today would go into "J:\iPad Photos\2019\11\19" and it's up to the staff to search through them. The QFile app can be configured and passcode protected to stop misconfiguation, though the upload only works when the app is running (even in the background).

 

So all our staff have to do is take photos on the iPad, press the QFile icon (it will show the passcode screen) and either leave it or press the home button. Photos will automatically appear in the staff share folder and they can find them.

We use the FileBrowser for Business app, but that's because FileBrowser for education hadn't been released when we purchased. It allows you to save the settings from one device and load them onto your others saving you hassle. For staff we map their documents as well as other network locations and for students, just a folder on the network which everybody can access to store the photos until printed etc.

 

It's worth mentioning that even though you don't currently use an MDM, we deploy the apps using Lightspeed and you can deploy the settings through a plist file automatically, saving a lot of time!

We have a mac mini which is connected to a network share. We use the built in imagecapture on the mac to get the photos or videos off on to the network drive. We only have a handful of iPads and it's not something we do often so we've never needed a faster method

There are obviously lots of ways round it, but back to the OP's actual issue.

 

Are we saying that iPads are not recognised by Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019?

Come on guys, when has Apple ever played nicely with anything other than Apple?

I have got this setup across my sites, and it works without issue.

It essentially pulls the entire camera roll into your web browser and allows you to select which files need to be transferred to your PC.

You can still use the App without having to download and install the Windows application, this works by navigating to the IP Address of the iPad, and the same happens where you pull the entire camera roll into your web browser.

Really easy to setup and use.

We use the Feem app to transfer files between iPads and Windows.

 

You have the Feem app on the iPad, and a Windows client on the teacher desktops. Students then send files to the teacher over the local wireless network, no cloud, no cables, all internal (I say students, it's normally staff that do it for them).

 

It works well for us, but does unfortunately make it easy for people to dump large video files on the Windows network.

How do people with apps on their iPads that access cloud/server storage stop little fingers uploading/deleting anything they want?

We use google drive to upload/share photos from iPads

 

However when connecting them to W10 PCs (1809) its a complete lucky dip as to whether you will see all, some or none of the photos.

Is it an Apple or a Windows issue though? I've never found the PTP 'pseudo-usb drive' thing to work particularly well in Windows and have always found it prone to unreliability and inconsistency, I guess because of it's emulated nature compared to directly accessing a real file system. Windows can be equally as hopeless with Android devices.

Not sure, it seems a lot worse with iOS and W10 though. I rarely had issues with W7 and iOS and I still very rarely have issues with W10 and Android.

There is zero point in having iPads at all if you've not got a cloud based workflow and resource in place, I've not plugged an iPad into a PC or a Mac for at least 4 years.

My school uses Foldr which is linked to our network drive to share ipad photos/files of the sort

Cameras are cheaper than iPads, buy cameras.

 

My problem is the iPad appears with an iPad driver, and then needs iTunes installed. To switch it to MTP requires manually changing a driver, and thus admin rights, dunno why.

Nothing to do with Apple iPads at all...more to do with how not to implement mobile devices in a school with poor internet access and staff wanting to print from them. Not that its so damn easy to set up an email account and send it

 

I totally agree with the other comment about buying cameras instead, if all you are doing is taking photos with iPads what an utter waste of money.
