so today i got this email : Hi Andy

Are you well and enjoying the last bit of sun before tomorrows rain?

Straight to the point – I’ve just started working here so have no clients at all. I need to be cheeky and ask if you could add me to your list of IT suppliers? Can’t have my kids going hungry can we?

More info available if you want it. Please be nice 😊

Regards,

(Name and company withheld by me)

but needless to say i don't know him/them and they wont be going on the list

Had a similar one yesterday but as a sales call. Guy asked how we are for servers and what are plans are?

Err, doesn't he know when schools have summer holidays and server purchases were done by 99% of schools weeks (or months) ago and not 2 days before the end of term

  • Thanks 1

Had a call yesterday at 16:20 just before I was leaving and wanted 20 minutes of my time to answer a survey they were doing about school purchases.

My answer was 'Im going in 5 minutes so can you call back another time'.

Their reply 'Im only scheduled to call you today and need these answers'

I replied 'ok thanks for your time bye' and hung up.

I only just ordered our servers at the start of this week - but I admit this is a rush job....

Not unprofessional, more misleading. People pretending to be from the DfE who turn out to be 'working' for the DfE on surveys.

We had this. "Training" from the "DfE". When I pointed out that the guys email was for some recruitment firm, the teacher wasn't happy with me!

We've been getting calls from out of State vendors that are spoofing the caller ID (another failing of the US telco industry) to make it look like they're local, thus increasing the chance of a pickup. I can't ignore these calls because I get a lot that are from vendors and contractors we actually do business with. I really do despise the sales industry.

Don't worry, it's not just the US!

To be fair, most number spoofing here is done by "proper" shady scammers/call centres/ambulance chasers/PPI people rather than real businesses being sneaky.

When we get a new phone system I'm going to put an extension in and forward those calls to the "IT manager" extension.

I had that, was like er... all our summer plans are locked in, finance are run ragged ensuring all orders/suppliers are paid up to date at the moment & there's just no way I'd want to add anything, or get approval even if I wanted. Goodbye

Especially annoying when people want to add last-minute things to plans purely down to they forgot, their incompetence, their lack of planning etc.

We're lucky in that we just say to them straight away "Are you on our purchasing consortium? No - then go to SUPC and register there, someone will be in touch." Job done! Mind you we're also locked into contracts with our suppliers so there's no chance of a new company getting a look in nowadays with us!
