woodham Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 so today i got this email : Hi Andy Are you well and enjoying the last bit of sun before tomorrows rain? Straight to the point – I’ve just started working here so have no clients at all. I need to be cheeky and ask if you could add me to your list of IT suppliers? Can’t have my kids going hungry can we? More info available if you want it. Please be nice 😊 Regards, (Name and company withheld by me) but needless to say i don't know him/them and they wont be going on the list
sat_s Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 Had a similar one yesterday but as a sales call. Guy asked how we are for servers and what are plans are? Err, doesn't he know when schools have summer holidays and server purchases were done by 99% of schools weeks (or months) ago and not 2 days before the end of term 1

hardtailstar Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 Had a call yesterday at 16:20 just before I was leaving and wanted 20 minutes of my time to answer a survey they were doing about school purchases. My answer was 'Im going in 5 minutes so can you call back another time'. Their reply 'Im only scheduled to call you today and need these answers' I replied 'ok thanks for your time bye' and hung up.

DrBeaker Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 Must confess...I thought this thread was about unprofessional introductions by companies to staff e.g. new staff
Edu-IT Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 Not unprofessional, more misleading. People pretending to be from the DfE who turn out to be 'working' for the DfE on surveys.
bald_pig Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Not unprofessional, more misleading. People pretending to be from the DfE who turn out to be 'working' for the DfE on surveys. We had this. "Training" from the "DfE". When I pointed out that the guys email was for some recruitment firm, the teacher wasn't happy with me!

Office: theres a call on the line from google/microsoft/apple me: put it through caller:Hi im calling from itcompany23245 would you like to buy.... 1
Duke5A Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 i hate this. Office: theres a call on the line from google/microsoft/apple me: put it through caller:Hi im calling from itcompany23245 would you like to buy.... We've been getting calls from out of State vendors that are spoofing the caller ID (another failing of the US telco industry) to make it look like they're local, thus increasing the chance of a pickup. I can't ignore these calls because I get a lot that are from vendors and contractors we actually do business with. I really do despise the sales industry.

Don't worry, it's not just the US! To be fair, most number spoofing here is done by "proper" shady scammers/call centres/ambulance chasers/PPI people rather than real businesses being sneaky.

Office: theres a call on the line from google/microsoft/apple me: put it through caller:Hi im calling from itcompany23245 would you like to buy.... When we get a new phone system I'm going to put an extension in and forward those calls to the "IT manager" extension.

Goodbye

SamanthaD Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 We're lucky in that we just say to them straight away "Are you on our purchasing consortium? No - then go to SUPC and register there, someone will be in touch." Job done! Mind you we're also locked into contracts with our suppliers so there's no chance of a new company getting a look in nowadays with us!
