CCTV for home

I have just purchased a property and needs a lot of work doing. I thought I might as well get the CCTV sorted whilst doing everything else so just wondering what cameras people would recommend. Need around 4 cameras and usually go for Hik Vision but open to alternatives.

Axis if you want to spend money, big fan of their kit (have about 100~ cameras at our school).

 

If it were my own home, I'd probably buy Ubiquiti cameras and use part of my homelab for storage. Hikvision/Trendnet are good cameras though, so you'll be good with those

As good as those cameras are, and I'll recommend them all day long, the storage requirements on the majority of PC based NVR software is too prohibitive for any useful retention period. For that reason you're likely better off with an off the shelf dedicated NVR system. Frankly, some of the cheap as chips things like Swann's kits aren't half bad for home use and around 4 cameras!

You won't go wrong with Hikvision kit, I have it at work (over 100 cameras across the sites) and I have installed it at home. The cameras are around the £100 mark and an 8 channel NVR is around £150 plus the cost of hard drives for storage. The camera's are plug and play powered directly from the recorder via POE

 

With 4 cameras running at 1080p and 8TB storage I had over 12 months of footage, that was using motion detection.

Just bought Arlo 3 Camera set from Amazon on offer for £280 very pleased with them they also do a 4 camera kit

I’ve got a couple of unifi and their NVR. It does its job, allows me to check things from anywhere and once setup is fire and forget.

4 x 6mp cameras and 4tb storage will give you well over 3 months running on h265+ on continuous mode.

i like cctv42 for home setups - but if you do like going down the DIY route then probably not for you.

Having used the unifi I can recommend you just get a cheapo Sannce Vision system. Cheap analogue system with a quick easy internet app that can use cloud or direct logins with no issues.

 

I have one of these and it great for less than a £100! all in.
