Basic PC/Laptop Toolkit

Anyone able to recommend a supplier for a decent quality, value for money, basic PC/Laptop repair toolkit - nothing more than pliers, screwdrivers (ideally magnetic), tweezers, allen keys etc.? Won't be needing a soldering iron.

I use iFixit kits. Has everything I've ever needed. They even have lifetime warranties also!

If you ever find one, let me know - I've been looking for an all-encompassing kit since for the better part of 15x years and still to find one.

 

This is the best I've found for the money. I have it myself and Yes - I know it has a soldering iron. But you'd pay that much for a decent model anyway if you ever needed one. You'll have to invest and build your kit up over time.

One place I worked had no tools at all when I started. It took 5x years to build up to a decent standard/collection of tools.

First thing i asked for when i joined my new place was an ifixit toolkit! Had one at old place and have one at home

+1 for iFixit for driver and all the driver bits you'll ever need. Best driver I've ever used. The various spudgers and opening tools they supply are essentials too. There's one that has a narrow spoon shaped end which is about as perfect as it gets for laptop keyboard mechanism repairs. Get a magnetic project mat as well: I never do any disassembly without one now.

Value for money? Go to Bett, there are usually some vendors giving out toolkits, I got these from Bett and I do most of my repair work with them:

Yup - I got one for free from BETT a few years ago - from Switch Store just to drop their name

 

it needs to be small - other wise I find I don't carry it round with me - I hate it when I get to a job and find I need something basic that I need to go back for! Big things like bigger screwdrivers, big hammer (you KNOW you will need it at some point) gaffer tape and otehr stuff can be kept in store room until needed

I carry a set of keys, pen, pocket screwdriver, swiss army knife, sharpie, encrypted USB stuck and a small torch when I'm at work. Same as you I'd sooner be able to sort out the job there and then if I can. But normally if it requires more tools it's going to be taken out of service for a while anyway.

Bought it at Maplins for about a tenner when I started full time in IT in 2003. Done a fair few repairs since then! I've added some allen keys & security screwdriver bits. Also replaced the ratchet screwdriver but only because I lost the other one somewhere.

Just thought - I have recently added a small button magnet to my kit - putting on the screwdriver make it a magnetic screwdriver and helps get screws out from that place they always drop into

We've all got something akin to this at work.

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I used anything other than a screwdriver.

iFixit here - love the Pro Toolkit. Has basically most things you would ever want, and the lid doubles up as a screw holder too. Only gripe is that it could do with some larger drivers for projector mounts and racks, but tbh, I normally have a Stanley Stubby multibit with me too.

If you're not going to BETT, the screwdriver can be picked up at most "Pound" stores. I have one of those, plus a torch, pen, sharpie, my phone and a multitool on my utility belt plus 3 USBs (assorted Portable Apps/files, multiboot and Windows 2 Go). Rarely need to go to my bag for other hard drives/leads and even less frequently to my car for the big (heavy!) bag of kit.
