There's an EdTech Surgery 18:00-19:00 on Thursday 24th ... the description concerns me a little. Hosted by three influential edtech practitioners - Neelam Parmar, Matt Harris and Abdul Chohan. These experienced speakers have created substantial change within education and accelerated school performance with the use of technology. This after-hours session delivers an opportunity to have your questions directly answered and to discuss pressing problems that require solutions when it comes to implementing tech in schools. What are you looking for this year?

Translated, it means looking at procurement, resources, strategies, infrastructure, adoption (both implementation and classroom adoption / hearts and minds) and operational aspects. As all of these inspirational speakers started out as teachers I still fail to understand why you would stop a teacher from hearing from them, may be you could learn something from them....

Hmm improving staff IT confidence would be a start and maintaining a culture of continous learning and doing would be a start. I don't want to hear "I'm not very good with technology" this year. It's 2019 adapt to the times.

We offer IT INSETs and other training, and I'm totally open to teaching people new skills, but it seems many don't want to know!

Because no matter how well intentioned some of the speakers are, and no matter how honest they are about not looking for silver bullets / buying the next shiny thing / avoiding things sold purely based on buzzwords ... there is a significant number of attendees at these sessions that *will* need more direction. People coming back from these sessions have been known to misquote, accuse IT Support of being blockers when IT Support have actually been following the guidance *they* heard / read when they started researching some of these themes several years ago ... and in some cases following some of the educational concepts involved for nigh on 20 years, having already implemented similar schemes in other schools. I think that is a fair summary of discussions on this area on EG, RM forums, Becta forums and various newsgroups and mailing lists over the last 20 years? Some things improve ... some thing don’t. It’s not about being negative but about having a sense of realism. Oh ... and there is the important matter that some of these sessions are *designed* to have multi-discipline teams attend to get the most out of them, so only one person going along will mean some points get missed. It could have been said that we would want an IT Tech to attend unaccompanied. That could also be a valid point to. Discuss. Edited January 4, 2019 by elsiegee40 1
mikeprice Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I have come across teachers attending stuff like this and coming back with this wonderful idea and next thing thousands are being spent on it When it was similar to things I had been pushing for years - only my solution was at a much smaller cost and was tailored to the school rather than being a generic thing Often expensive things are regarded as being valuable - but cheap/free things are ignored as being valueless - even if they do the same thing - and these seminars are normally about selling something at a price 1

Yes, that's true and I am sure that many may have something good to say - but I am mentally scarred by what happened a few years ago when speakers on the Google stand, right opposite Edugeek, stood there and said that teachers needed all this fancy IT stuff and Network Managers were blockers, and often didnt want to do anything that required them to do some work Yes, the speaker didnt just imply that, he really said it Teachers, not being technical in the most part (and indeed, why should they be?) hear about all this new tech and how simple it is and as nobody has offered any caveats about how to implement all this and the costs incurred, think that it is a simple matter and us in IT get it in the neck for not bringing in all this new stuff. Maybe there will be a reality check - maybe not 2

Your department has been allocated 1/12 of the total IT support time, of which 93% has been wasted because you can't read instructions, would you like me to spend the remaining 7% on researching this project? 1

Getting a solution out of them if it’s not something we can fix is harder.

I too was hoping to see library management companies. the only one i can see is Libresoft.
