[sims] SIMS on Server 2016 RDS

Has anyone managed to get SIMS .Net to run properly on Server 2016? I have tried so many things now but it will not run at all if the RDSH role is installed.

 

My latest test was:

 

 

1. Set up Server 2016 VM
   
2. Install SIMS .Net
   
3. Test SIMS .Net - works fine
   
4. Add the server to a Remote Desktop collection
   
5. Open SIMS .Net - won't open at all.
   

 

I receive 2 messages in the Application event log:

I have tried disabling Data Execution Protection entirely, on the advice of our SIMS team. We have tried both with and without our anti-virus software (Bitdefender) installed (and with exceptions when it is installed).

 

Does anyone have any clues?

Yup, got it running on our two Remote Desktop hosts, Server 2016. Not part of a farm, just individual servers. That would seem to be the part that's interfering then! Ours is the LTSB build, 1607.

Thanks. Interesting that it works for you. We need to do it via a farm (its more secure to send it via HTTPS, due to RDP having no brute-force protection etc...).

 

Do you use User Profile Disks with those servers?

Anyone got any other ideas?

We don't use User Profile Disks, and we don't use traditional RDP - we use a web client which works over 443. Can understand why you need your setup though.

I have SIMS working on a 2016 VM ware VM (part of a farm), has RDSH and Licencing, SIMS runs as a RemoteApp program. Didn't do anything special for the install, just added the server to SOLUS3. Uses traditional profiles in the Users folder.

 

This is with a 2012r2 Physical with Connection broker, RDSH, RD Virtualisation host, licencing and RD Web access. No apps on this one, just Hyper-V VM running a client OS.

Are you running SIMS as a RemoteApp, or just via RDP/Web RDP? SIMS runs just fine on our RDS server (web RDP).

 

I know that if you're packaging SIMS as a RemoteApp you have to package Pulsar.exe, not SIMSLoad.exe

We ended up switching back to 2012 R2 as it worked.

 

We run as RDP via gateway/web gateway. We don't use RemoteApp.

 

As shown in the error messages, it is pulsar.exe that is faulting.

Same problem here but adding paramenter - Pulsar.exe, got us further but now I am getting "Incorrect Connect.ini" error (though on the server SIMS runs fine). Anybody have any ideas about this one?

I use it via RemoteApp but performance is slightly worse than with 2012. Also, there is the occasional issue with the session just turning black when you would expect a screen update and I think it's something to do with the rendering. I've noticed it on the CAPITA hosted platform too as they have moved to 2016. Anyone encountered this at all?

Can't say I've seen any performance issues on 2016 or 2019 which I have just updated to. for SIMS I launch the app by pulsar.exe . as for the incorrect sims ini does it contain the instance details or is it using s redirect to the s drive and your s drive is not mapping when the users login?

Realised that SIMS drive on the server was manually mapped, I have disconnected it and restarted the server - all work fine now. Thank you.
