hardtailstar Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Hi All, We are experiencing an issue with Google File stream and Office 2016 When trying to open up Office files mainly PowerPoints from Google File stream we get the error below The PPTs open fine from the users own drive area in windows and shared drives. Just any Google drive we get this error. I have tried uninstalling and installing, repairing office, different version of office but still get the samee issue. We are running Windows 7 64bit with Office 2016. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
TwistedHelixis Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Don't think this is related but I have just had an email from a teacher with the same issue and I have never seen this error before. We are on Win 10, Office 2013 and the issue is not with Google or File Stream as the teacher is downloading the PPT from an internet site to their downloads folder. They have reported it gives that message if they try to open it from the Downloads folder but if they move the file to the desktop and then it opens fine. 1
fiza Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 I know that Google are having issues with their G Suite services currently. Could this be related? https://www.google.com/appsstatus#hl=en-GB&v=status 1

Cannot open from own areas or shared drives. Can only open them from desktop.
limawhiskey Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Saw the same error here yesterday, nothing to do with File Stream but this powerpoint had been saved from an email to a network drive. Copying it to the local drive resulted in the same error message. On opening another working powerpoint file we got the 'Powerpoint has opened in safe mode' message. Next time opening the 'problem' file it worked fine.
hardtailstar Posted October 31, 2018 Author Posted October 31, 2018 Have found if you go into the Powerpoint settings and untick the three boxes in the Trust centre Protected view settings, this seems to work as a temporary fix. Obviously we dont want to leave them unticked but its working for now.
limawhiskey Posted November 1, 2018 Posted November 1, 2018 (edited) This seems to be related to files which have the alternate data stream to indicate they have come from an untrusted Zone (i.e. files whose properties have the Unblock button). Normally you would see the Enable editing security banner in Office programs, but we seem to be getting this same error instead (added the text for anyone searching):We're sorry, something went wrong that might make PowerPoint unstable. Please save your presentations and restart PowerPoint. If you 'unblock' the file it opens fine, which is why the measures @hardtailstar mentioned work too. It seems to have happened over the last couple of days which points to a Windows update, but this is even happening for us on machines that have not restarted to apply updates. So all this points to some issue running Protected View or transitioning from Protected View to normal editing, but only in PowerPoint - other Office apps are not affected. As an aside, I agree the Protected View security is there for a reason but in realistically can anyone say that they don't just hit the Enable editing button to get on with their tasks?! Cache Posted November 1, 2018 Posted November 1, 2018 Not related to GDrive however, we get the "Powerpoint is unstable" message if the user has the preview pane open in explorer and then opens the powerpoint. If the preview pane is closed, then the error doesn't occur. Might help someone else. 1
TwistedHelixis Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Getting more and more reports of this issue
caffrey Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Happening here too, well and seemingly only for me and it's been like that a few days wonder if it's this update ? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=57404
caffrey Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 (edited) Just uninstalled this one, and my powerpoint works again https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=57288 The other wasn't the fault Edit, nope wasn't that either, oh well back to the drawing board Edited November 7, 2018 by caffrey 1
hardtailstar Posted November 12, 2018 Author Posted November 12, 2018 Still causing issues here. No matter what we try to resolve it, still having issues. The only way to not get the errors is to untick the protected view as ive said above.
atcoates Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 We've had the issue with power point for a few weeks. Also a teacher has lost work as not saving correctly. A few teachers have given up and gone back to saving to the server.
Chrisbf1 Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 came across this today, office 2010. Really annoying!!
IrritableTech Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 Were getting these reports today too. W10 & Office 2016.
TwistedHelixis Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 I am now getting some PP files that are corrupted. This has happened for 2 teachers that had the error above when trying to open those files the other day. Since they have removed the 3 ticks they are getting that the pp is corrupted but can open other power points that they had not tried last week.
SpaceInvader83 Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 Same issue here as the rest, I've gone back through and removed the last round of updates, repaired the office install (2016 32 bit) and still no joy. I've only become aware of the issue since the following updates went out: KB4461437 KB4011669 KB4461449 KB4461448 KB4461440 KB4092445 KB4461434 KB4461443 KB4461442
DGardiner Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 this is a pain in the backside just had everyone complain about it in the staffroom - has anyone actually managed to get it working?
thealmightyjohn Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 I've run into this today. After much troubleshooting, I was able to reproduce the issue on my laptop by installing Google Drive File Stream (GDFS). After uninstalling the problem goes away. With GDFS installed, you can work around the bug by unchecking in PowerPoint - File>Settings>Trust Center>trust center settings>protected view>"enable protected view for files originating from the Internet" I've reported the issue to google drive. I'd advise other do as well. EDIT- is anyone seeing this issue who does not have File Stream installed? 2

Have to check on Tuesday, but I think the first person who reported the problem doesn't have GDFS. Kinda feel that removing Protected View isn't a good long-term solution, though. caffrey Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 (edited) Me and my technician both have file stream, not getting reports from the rest of the site without it, so I think you've narrowed it down *Edit technician just uninstalled sync and Powerpoint started working again, wonder if it's related to the version conflicts thing they were working on... Going to attempt to turn the option off https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2018/09/real-time-presence-in-microsoft-office.html Seems like turning off "Allow users to enable real-time presence in Microsoft Office from Drive File Stream" seems to fix it.... TwistedHelixis Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 is anyone seeing this issue who does not have File Stream installed? Although we do have file stream installed at our schools, a few teachers have told me they have the issue with files that have not been saved in File Stream. A few have downloaded Power Points from twinkle and then tried to open them from the downloads folder. Obviously I am just going on what they are telling me and its possible they have copied it to file stream and then back, who knows.

TwistedHelixis Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 I've reported the issue to google drive. I'd advise other do as well. How did you report? Was it through Cloud Connect? https://www.cloudconnectcommunity.com/ccc/
JATSO Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 As some have already pointed out its not really related to GFS or Drive its PowerPoint protected mode as it was throwing up the error with any powerpoint file downloaded from the internet so as a workaround in respect of the error message I got round it by turning off Protected File Mode in the Trust Centre of Powerpoint.
