Anyone using ESET

We are looking at moving away from SOPHOS due to the price. Has anybody done this. Is anybody using ESET and if so aare you happy with eperformance/price etc

We have been using ESET for 10+ years - very happy with functionality and performance.

Not sure how price compares to other comparable products.

ESET from Sophos here too. ESET much better, clean, light, easy to manage, good support.

 

Can't rate it highly enough. Just works.

Moved from Sophos (onsite server) to ESET (offsite server) earlier this year. The UI and the setup take a lot of getting your head round compared to Sophos - IMO it's far more complex and granular. There are some really, really stupid foibles with the interface (can't get it to work in Firefox, for one) and the expiry of install tasks had me pulling my hair out. Once set up it seems to be okay, across PC and Mac.

Also moved from Sophos to ESET. Only thing I don't really like about it so far is that it won't auto update the clients (with the software update, the AV definition updates happen automatically).

ESET here through Softbox (Information Security | SBL). Agree about the auto update client optio is needed. I went from 6 to 7 recently and had to manually do some machines... oh and some of the clients are 'stuck' on 7 and i can only update them using safe mode.

 

Other than that... perfick.

@Katy - I assume you mean it won't automatically push an engine upgrade out? But you can still schedule one using the management console, right?

ESET here and pretty happy with it. I find the UI for the remote administrator console to be a bit of a faff, certainly not as intuitive as others with having to create lots of rules and going through multiple steps to get information such as the threats it has found on a host. But the most important thing is it works and it doesn't hinder performance, even on older devices with low specification.

Yeah, but it's a bit of a faff - dynamic group for "if the version is less than (whatever the latest is, you have to find this out yourself)" with a task for "install the update". They said it's meant to be better in the new console which may or may not be out yet.

 

No idea who we get ours from as it's done at the trust level, wouldn't be surprised if it was direct with ESET as we've got a 20,000 PC licence.

 

But as others have said, I've never had a PC crawling and gone in task manager to see eset on 99% CPU... unlike what SAVservice.exe used to do in Sophos land.

We find this an issue, too - we have the ESET client install at re-imaging time, so as soon as a machine is re-imaged it should have up-to-date antivirus on it. There doesn't seem to be a sensible way to get the actual antivirus client to do a silent install, you have to install the management client, then wait for that to update in the background before carrying on and installing anything else. We hold up our base software install until antivirus is installed, so when the client version changes and doesn't update on the console, our imaging process freezes at the ESET install stage.

I'm currently trying to get the new (version 7) appliance VM playing nicely with Smoothwall. The base OS (Centos 7) can use SW for updates and everything, but the ESET console appears to use the proxy settings in the Web UI for how it should reach the Internet and how clients should pull updates.

 

Ideally I want the clients to pull updates using the caching proxy built into the appliance which should chain to the SW, but so far it's not playing nicely.

Got a Eset quote from a new supplier, £6.14 per machine for a 3 year license which seems better however that said 3 years ago I paid £4.50 per machine for a 3 year license.
