I started at my current NM role as a lone IT support bod (only managed myself??) but after 3 months of continuous fire fighting and not having time to actually "manage" anything, I basically said - you either get me a technician so that I can manage and improve this network, or I am off! It was too soul destroying leaving at the end of each day knowing that I had improved virtually nothing. I had fixed plenty of issues, but the underlying causes were still there. Thankfully they agreed and I have been in a team of 2 here for 10 years. That too has had its ups and downs, but overall far better. The 2 biggest benefits for me are time (to plan and work on sometimes complex things) and being able to bounce ideas back and forth about problems that I may not have fixed on my own or would have at best taken longer to fix.

So just to tip me off my self-righteous perch - had first support staff member in this morning who has forgotten their card!

We have started charging for them after the second loss.

Ha ha no! All staff have to display their ID on a lanyard whenever they are on site - plus without them they cannot access any doors.

We have been using Paxton security passes for all staff for the past year or so. Several times a week we have to issue spare temporary cards to staff who have forgotten or loose them. Just realised - that out of the dozens and dozens of times over the past year when people have forgotten / lost their card, not 1 has been non-teaching staff. It has been 100% teaching staff. For context we have approx. 50 non teaching staff (including all cleaners, dinner staff etc - who all have cards) and 65 teaching staff!

We have been using ESET for 10+ years - very happy with functionality and performance. Not sure how price compares to other comparable products.

For the first time my school is developing an official On Line Safety Policy. As Network Manager, I am pleased this is happening. I have seen a first, on-going draft of this policy. What concerns me is that, I seem to be pushed into the role of On Line Safety Co-ordinator and all the day to day and on-going responsibilities associated with that. As a Network Manager, should I be expected to be the On Line Safety Co-ordinator? I thought (may be wrongly!?) that this should be part of the DSL role or other senior management. I would appreciate peoples experiences and thoughts on this.

This is going back to my first technicians job in a school about 13/14 years (Windows 2000/XP). Cmd.exe was not blocked by the network manager. The things I can remember from the top of my head - Students used telnet to access our exchange server to spoof emails from teaching staff (very amusing, but potentially disastrous). Students enabled the net send service and sent random explicit messages to other pc's on the LAN. They created different .bat files and saved them in the "all users/startup" folder. The script rebooted the pc after 5 mins etc.

Nothing personal taken here Roberto. Although I don't see why any of this should "annoy" you? I am not trading on fear of the unknown - but past experience. May I ask what your 16-19 year olds actually use the command prompt for? What are they actually able to do with it? (And learn from?)
