Sheridan Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 Bit of an odd issue with PP 2016 here, that affects everyone other than admins - when they go to Insert and online video, and use the Youtube search dialogue they can select a video and then Insert it. However the video doesn't insert - you can see the message in the toolbar saying 'Powerpoint is inserting media' and then nothing else happens, no video appears However do the same thing in Word 2016 and it works fine. And it works fine for Word and powerpoint for admins! This is where is gets a bit tricky, our GPOs are very lightweight for Office so nothing is blocked there, so I've looked at our filtering (smoothwall) but can't see anything being blocked - and as Word works it would imply that filtering isn't the issue. Anyone else seen this? It would have made sense to me if it failed in both Word and PP, but its only PP that does nothing!

It looks like the same player embedding into Word which works ok, so it does seem specific to PP.
LeMarchand Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 We were having the same problem recently and I thought it was narrowed down to the users missing updates. They were all "close the lid" users, so they were probably never getting updates that needed a restart.
Sheridan Posted June 5, 2018 Author Posted June 5, 2018 Ours are all WSUS clients, so are installing update as reliably as can be expected with W10 - i.e sometimes! I've checked on one and its up to date, and not missing any updates when checking online either. With it working for domain admins I first suspected the smoothwall, but nothing flags up. I did see some old posts about whitelisting youtube.com/embed but we did that when we had issues with office 2013, this appears to be a new one.

3s-gtech Posted June 5, 2018 Posted June 5, 2018 Yup, never got it to work properly. Instead, try using the embed code rather than Youtube search. Go to Youtube, copy the Embed code (under Share), and usually, add ?autoplay=1 so that it plays on slide change (otherwise it'll skip the slide without playing with a remote presenter). This setup still isn't right for our users, but that's a GPO/proxy issue as it works on my PCs.

I can see the hits on youtube going through the smoothwall at this time as well. Very bizarre. The embed code option does work in Word though!

Can you remember what you had to whitelist? I've already whitelisted the /embed link, and with various HTTPS inspection policies in place I don't want to overrule them.

3s-gtech Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 I didn't have to whitelist here to make it work, but doing so should remove that as a fault-finding measure. Next step is to try it on a machine logged on as a local admin, if you're not doing so already.

Sheridan Posted June 7, 2018 Author Posted June 7, 2018 Removing SSL inspection from youtube is probably a non starter for us, unless we do it for staff only. Odd how PP2016 works different to Word2016 for the exact same task though.
dfew Posted June 27, 2018 Posted June 27, 2018 One of my colleagues today figured out the offending GPO/IE setting to fix this. IE settings > Advanced > Do not save encrypted pages to disk - this needs to be unchecked.
