How loud is this speaker

Getting a speaker Soundbar to go above a smartboard and have been quoted for one that I have been told is 90w, but I cant find that in the speaker specs but it does say 90w on the box.

 

These are the specs

Power Consumption: 65W

Amplifiers• Class-D power-stages• 2x15W capability@<10% THD+N• 2x30W capability@<10% THD+N

 

Now if I add all the outputs up together it does equal 90w but if the speaker supports 90w why does it not say that in the specs?

Wattage has nothing to do with how loud a speaker is. You need to be looking at the dB rating, often quoted as xx dB@1m.

 

It is possible to have a 50w speaker that is more efficient than a 100w speaker, hence the 50w would be louder.

Yup, and quoting power at up to 10% THD is ludicrous, by that point it'll sound horrendous. I'd almost be expecting those to be 'peak' power figures rather than RMS.

 

Most reputable manufacturers quote at a maximum of 1% THD, My Naim stuff is quoted at 0.1%!

 

What do you need the soundabr to take? Just a line input? Does it need blutooth or anything like that?

They're the latest in the line of the old Sahara's - fine for most sized classrooms in terms of useable volume. The only downside I can see is the controls are on the side of a speaker - means you'll be limited in how high you can mount them.

That new version comes with a remote control so mounting height doesn't really matter. The main issue with these would be if (when) the remote goes missing it may be difficult to source a replacement.

Since touch screens took over the sound bar is rearing its ugly head. There is no reason in most cases to inflict them on yourself. Traditional IWB amplified speakers do a much better job. Just look at the size of the drivers on a sub £100 soundbar and compare to the diameter of a proper powered speaker.

 

Also can I just say I hate soundbars and powered speakers with tiny remotes that instantly get lost in a classroom and is yet another item to keep track of.

 

I like the Vision speakers with a wall mounted control panel which also contains the amp. It does come with an IR remote but you don't need it. We use them in both our halls but they are not overkill in a classroom in my opinion.

We have these across all my sites. No frills sound, and reasonably priced.

You can set the speaker volume to as loud as you think is reasonable then staff can adjust on the output source so no need to adjust the speaker.

I agree this is fine for classroom use - not something I would do for anything louder as your gain structure is then all to pot!

 

Re soundbars - we've just installed a pair of Crestron Saros soundbars in 2 meeting rooms. These are brilliant, no controls and just take the variable output from the screen. Sound pretty decent for the size. I didn't mention them due to price constraints (they're around £350 each) but if you want a soundbar that just works - I don't think you can go far wrong with that.

I was speaking to a supplier who said that unless we are willing to pay a good few hundred ££ forget about soundbars in a classroom environment and only look at separates.

We’ve been putting these up in classrooms, now got about 15 sets in place. They’re pretty decent, staff seem to like them.

 

Just a heads up, the last ones we bought came from a company called The IT Storeroom in Bristol, only £48 per pair.
