What to do with your original Xbox?

alright,

 

so I found my original xbox under the stairs today and was woundering that to do with it, so what have people done with there's, I have a 360 and getting a ps3 next month.

Hack it and stick Linux on it with a 500 GB HDD inside, or with XBMC on it wirelessly streaming your Video, photos and music

i second the XBMC route.

i rarely use the 120gb drive in mine, but use it to stream stuff to my bedroom. definitely better than a media center pc.

If you have an original copy of Splinter Cell (not a platinum disc) then you can mod the Xbox without opening it up and install XMBC that way.

 

You will need to search for the how-to's.

 

Of course you will need to open it up at some point to stick in a larger HDD.

i can third that, i use mine as an XLMC 500Gb Hard drive use it for streaming DivX film Collection

Just had an idea... don't know if it's possible, but how about getting the Eee PC linux onto an xbox?! That would make for a pretty cool little mini PC.

you can extract the asuslauncher program (the gui with the tabs) the rest is IceWM, so any distro should be able to run it.

if I recall correctly you can still play your games with xbmc.

To do online play you download xlink kai and use that instead. The best part about this was you could also play nodded halo too.

Don't know. Haven't tried, since I have both connected and can't be bothered to download a load of conversion files onto my 360...

Most definitely go down the XBMC route.

 

I stream music, video, podcasts from my desktop machine.

 

You can also find emulators for the popular old consoles as well.

 

Grab an Xbox DVD Remote (£5 second hand from Amazon) for easy control.

 

I paid £50 for mine from Game two years ago. It came pre-chipped with a wireless remote. I've barely used it as a console, as I'm not a fan, however as a Media Centre it's fantastic.

 

There's also a BBC iPlayer script for it now, which downloads the iPod format videos to your Xbox and lets you watch them on a big screen.

I got given an Old Xbox a bit back that was supposidly broken, something to do with the DVD Drive i think. Might look into this, do they have to be chipped?

No they don't have to be chipped. There is a software hack that uses an exploit found in the fonts. So when you use something that uses the fonts or something it then runs arbitrary code and then launches Linux that installs an alternative dashboard.

 

This can be exploited by running a Splinter Cell saved game which has been modified slightly so when executed runs alternative code instead.

 

You do not need to open your Xbox and the latest installs can usually be rolled back as well.

 

It's been a while since i did mine so a lot might have changed since.

 

The DVD drive also changed in each revision to the Xbox so you may be able to find a better drive. Some wouldn't read certain type of media. CD-RW's mainly.

 

PS you will also need the ORIGINAL splinter cell not the platinum (or xbox equivalent) as it was most probably patched on this revision of the game.

 

Emulators: Great SNES emu, and PSone emu. If you have the old games and the software to create the ISOs from them then you just upload the ISO to the right folder (using FTP) and run the emu.

 

and the Amiga Emu as well.

Just wondering if its possible to use a keyboard and mouse with it through the usb ports on linux? If not are there any mods for 360 that work in a similar way but allow me to continue to use live?

I tried but never really got it to work but it doesn't mean that it won't work. I ain't exactly hot on Linux anyhow.

 

The linux is a command line version but i think you can install a fully fledged linux distro if you know how.

 

It's been a while since i have done one so it's all a bit vague now.

ah right cheers. TBF I cant see it worth the effort of finding out, linux is best on PCs and I wouldnt get on with a controller.
