Anyone else try ED in VR? What's the verdict?

Some NSFW language. Ye be warned!

(It's actually quite the favourable review, for the record, just 'Is a nightmare' is kind of UpIsNotJump's 'thing')

Got my PSVR the month it came out, and i still use it, i was on it last night as Titanic VR was released. The amount of content on PSVR is vast now so you should not get bored of it if you have that. I will admit there was a period of about 4 months where i did not touch it once but that was due to not much content being there in the earlier days and had enough of the games i did have for it.

I'm tempted for the sake of Elite Dangerous (late to the party...) but will only get 2nd hand and sell on as soon as the novelty wears off.

If there's no new tech coming to market we will make do with what we have for now.

I did the same. Got a second hand Rift CV1 with touch controllers on ebay for £225.

Playing elite in VR is a revelation. Everything is huge!

Flying is more fun, Thargoids scarier, docking more entertaining.

Providing you know your button layout well enough to use it without looking then you'll be fine.

If you get the focus just right it's lovely. And totally immersive. But it can be a bit blurry around the edges sometimes.

Having said that, I've played a load of games in VR now and it's almost always a great experience.

Special mentions to Elite, Skyrim VR, Guns n Stories, Dead effect 2 VR. Great games all!

I bought that Lenovo headset when it was on black Friday sale a couple of weeks ago. There was an offer on HotUKDeals which was too cheap for me to resist!

I only received it a couple of days ago but first impressions are good. The resolution is decent and the "inside-out" tracking using the headset cameras works really well.

Elite dangerous is epic in VR and I bought Skyrim VR for it though haven't played it yet. I'll probably wait until the winter Steam sale before picking up any more titles though.

Played a great flying game called Ultrawings - when I first saw the graphics I thought it was a load of dung, but after playing it on PS VR it really captures the sensation of flight; as your eyes focus as if you are really up there in the sky. Made me consider getting VR; normally I am an FPS guy but FPS games IMO are boring in VR, they have very slow movement (or that teleporting rubbish) - flying is where it is at (either fixed wing or rotor/hovercraft) - or driving games.

I just wish the VR resolution was a lot higher as it is very burry. Why is VR resolution so low?

Have you tried Firewall Zero on the PSVR with the gun? I really enjoyed it.

I took the plunge, albeit second-hand ( a bargain Rift for £110 on fleabay - just needed the padding replaced) and I think it's pretty amazing.

I have a good GPU and so I can run it at high settings but the resolution is much better than I thought, ED is awesome - so much easier - and I was really blown away by Senua's Sacrifice.

I won't be able to play either of those on a flat screen again. ED looks so restricted with it's tiny field of view on a regular screen now (and I have a 27" 1440 screen)

There's no getting away from the slight blur at the edges and pixels that are visible, but you'll see them on any screen as close as a VR headset.

It'll be a while before we all have GPUs capable of running higher resolutions in VR , but for now we have what we have. I love it.

still waiting for the prices to come down and the games to get better. with mining crashing and gpu prices becoming a lot fairer we'll probably see a higher uptake

Ultrawings is great. I'll probably buy it again for the Quest!

One thing I found that made massive difference for my use of Playstation VR was to double check the IPD setting. It basically adjusts the image based on the distance between your eyes. This varies between people and can make the image appear blurry if the default doesn't work for you.

I looked into VR last year, but my current available space is tiny. I can sit in my chair but can't even spin round as it's an alcove surrounded by walls and a bed. From what I've read there's not enough room for the cameras to track my head movements.

If the self-tracking that's going to be in the new headsets allows for me to actually play whilst sat down and only moving my head, that'd be a purchase from me next year! Thanks for the link @flyinghaggis :)

It really has taken a long time to be a mainstream 'thing'... But back in the 50's they thought we'd all be in flying cars by now, right?

There's so many factors in anything becoming reality; is there the vision to do it (many things are thought of in sci-fi novels before anyone actually does them), is there a big enough need/demand (or is there a military/industrial application - as this often drives R&D), does the technology exist or does it have to be created, or will there be a big enough profit (which is normally the bottom line)...

Sometime in the early 90's I used to be a manager of a bowling alley which had an arcade attached.

We had a VR machine delivered which looked something like this:

The graphics were blocky/vector type things and it had a 'flight' simulator or a tank game (memory is a bit vague as it was about 25 years ago), I seem to remember it didn't last very long and it crashed a lot.

I only play games that are seated and just require me to move my head from side to side while using regular PC game controllers. My oculus rift with a single sensor above the monitor does this perfectly...You only need multiple sensors if wanting a lot of room for movement and dedicated VR controllers.

Any one heard much about the Valve Index? Looks a really nice system but it is still a grand!

Cheaper for those that have the vive already, as they can use their existing sensors.

With these new generation headsets the resolution is meant to be noticably better, using LCD to minimise the gaps between pixels - although the darker areas will be a little washed out this sounds like a good move.

I don't know what the perfomance will be like for an average GPU, but I suspect anyone wanting a good experience to have to upgrade that too, if they haven't aready got a top end card. Standalone headsets like the oculus quest will be pants in comparison.

I can't wait to try one. It's definately the one I want to go with next...better get saving.

The valve index sounds good but it's kind of expensive plus I'd also need to buy a new video card to run it! Whilst the base station tracking is the most effective method it pretty much means you need to devote an entire room to your VR setup! I'd also really hoped they'd manage to include wireless functionality

(given the near four figure price tag) as the tethering cable is awful from both a safety and immersion viewpoint.

I think I'll probably wait to see what the next Playstation 5 / PSVR 2 brings to the table before I consider any PC VR alternatives again. That's at least another year or two away though.

Resurrecting an old thread here, but last night, I discovered the new Oculus Quest, which is "all-in-one" VR headset - Runs its own games, doesn't require a heavy duty PC to connect to, and is completely cable-free (it has a battery life of 2-3 hours, apparently). One of the launch titles for it is Vader Immortal, and it looks exactly like what you'd want from a VR Star Wars game. After watching some gameplay, I may have kinda accidentally on purpose placed an order...

Whilst it runs its own OS, with a 3rd party app, it seems you can connect it to your PC too. I'm looking forward to giving Elite: Dangerous and Star Trek: Bridge Crew (among other things) a go with this!

Ohh, I'll be interested in your thoughts when you accidentally get it. I saw it and my worry was it my end up a bit like the Android VR, with lots of time wasting games, nothing meaty and lots of IAP. 2-3 hours sounds about right for a gaming session for me so as long as I remember to charge it I would be OK. The PC connection sounds great if my laptop will manage. I would just need to decide this over a console!

I'll certainly report back when I get it, although I'm not entirely sure when that will be. The only information I have is "Dispatches by July 17"!
