It's authorising a one-time payment of a specific, non-negotiable amount without having to use online services. It carries with it its own problems (no guarantee funds are available, 3-7 day wait, etc) but in principle it works. It's a decent middleground between a BACS transfer that carries no protection and setting up a proper purchasing framework. I don't have a chequebook, the only time I've ever handled a cheque is when British Gash owed me £600 and refused to pay it via any other method. But I get why people still hang on to them.

We last wrote a cheque in March 2017 for membership of a local wildlife group. The last cheques received were by our children... Christmas money from Grandma who doesn’t do eBanking and won’t post cash. At work, I finally got all our suppliers except one converted to BACS in 2014. The one was a judo teacher who gave me a long lecture on why he didn’t trust bank transfer and why all his employees had to be paid by cheque.

About 2 years ago IIRC. Even my dad, who used cheques everywhere, now doesn't use them - he's even started using contactless!

Turns out he never cashed it and we called it evens later in the year when we split another box of Warhammer stuff. And since I owe him rather a lot for an upcoming convention hotel room that he's organised, I might have to write another one as I don't have any electronic way of paying (no PayPal doesn't count. Paypal).

Paypal). you know you can just log into your online bank and if you have their account code throw money at them that way?

Bank transfers work for a gentleman's agreement between friends, but if you're unfamiliar with online banking (or can't access it at the time) or simply want some kind of payment protection, a cheque is still a good idea. They just need 20th-century-ising.
unixman_again Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I last wrote a cheque in December, to pay my council tax. The next one I write will be in March when the new council tax starts. The last time that I received a cheque was in September, a delay repay from London Midland. I always ask for a cheque for delay repay. In both cases, I do it to piss them off. They both want to do it direct to/from your account, but I don't allow that. In the case of London Midland, the cheque option for delay repay is well hidden, but I found it. I haven't claimed from the new franchise yet. 1
Katy Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Last cheque was for the installation of the new windows in my house last June, for some reason because I wasn't getting them on finance I had to pay the window company for the windows and the installer for the installation (if it's on finance you pay the window company and they pay the installer). Paid for the windows on card, installer says "cash or cheque only" (and looked very disappointed when I got a cheque out). Made out a single cheque for the full amount but they wanted one each for 50% of the amount... which I refused to do as "oh it's my last cheque". (I was expecting to pay the company name on the installation invoice, in the end it was payable to one of the installers who then had to go get cash out to pay the other )
caffrey Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Can't remember the last time I wrote one, but the last one i received was a car tax refund from the DVLA for the grand total of 2 quid, nearest bank is miles away since they closed my local branch so It's not worth the petrol money to deposit it
