Photography road trip 2018

Hi All,

 

I am going on a road trip with a friend of mine in February around the UK.

 

We are staying in each place one night then moving onto the next.

 

The places we are staying are: York, Whitby, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and Southampton.

 

We will be staying close to town/city centres so is there anything of interest that people know about that is not a usual tourist spot to take photos?

 

I know we havent got much time in the places so ideally anything in the towns/citys

Why not the usual?

 

Won't you be in places that you've been to before?

 

Anyway - between Newcastle and Edinburgh you will be spoilt for choice with coastline and castles....how about a boat trip to the Farne Islands or drive over the causeway to Holy Island?

I'll be looking at the usual spots but wanted to know if people knew about anything that is good to visit.

The Northeast is very rich in photography opportunities and you'll be spoilt for choice. Not just castles and and great landscapes there are stacks of Industrial heritage sites along the coast and within the cities, towns and villages.

For Roman history you have Hadrians Wall, Binchester Roman Fort near Bishop Auckland.

For industrial, look at Teeside Transporter Bridge and others in Newcastle , Roseberry Topping if you have time to walk it great views from up there on good day.

Just done Whitby, last half term break for a day and posted a couple of pics on here. Robin Hoods Bay, Saltburn.

Penshaw Monument near Sunderland.

Not far from York you have Fountains Abbey.

Beamish Museam if you want Victorian and if your calling in Newcastle you'll pass Durham home of Durham Cathedral.

Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick Castle and Gardens.

I live in York and I would say most people don't seem to take picture of the city from the top of the barre walls. If you go up on those you can take some nice photos over the river and gardens within the city. You should definitely take photos of the Minster as it's an amazing building that everyone needs to take a picture of when they visit.

Cardiff... head to the Cardiff Bay Area.

Anything. I photograph landscape and animals, my friend does buildings and landscape.

Anywhere along the waterfront

Unusual views of the Ichen Bridge

University Botanic Gardens (most people dont even know they are there)

Cruise ships against Southampton Water

Just outside the city you have got so much to choose from including the New Forest, the Purbecks, the Isle of Wight..you will be spoilt for choice

Southampton - plenty of the old City Walls/Bargate that you could get some interesting views of/from. I believe the Civic Centre clock tower is accessible so that could be a good vantage point for you. Rivers and bridges close by (eg Itchen Bridge). Also a quick trip to the docks (10 minutes in the car) might give you some good shots of any large ocean liners currently moored there. If you added a night in at Salisbury then you'd get a chance to drive by Stonehenge and Salisbury itself is interesting.

If you've got time then I'd suggest a canoe trip down the wye valley on your way down to Cardiff. Canoes have dry stores and there's some brilliant river banks along route for some shoots.

Wont have the time but ive got a plan in the future to do a canoe trip so will keep that in mind.

Some good locations there, York rail museum is not a bad place, depends how busy though.

 

Southampton, lots not far from there, New Forest, Gosport/Portsmouth dock area. Just missed the big boat been launched the other week.

 

I'm looking at doing something similar in Scotland, want to do the North Coast 500 but needs a bit of planning that I don't have time for. Picked some good locations I think.

Liverpool way you have Anthony Gormleys 'Another Place' on Crosby beach which is well worth a look:

 

 

There is also 'The Dream' near St Helens on the way in:

 

 

Also in Liverpool is the Banksy up near Chinatown:

 

 

TBH, you could walk around Liverpool all day and find tons if interesting things to take pics of.

If you are going as far as Edinburgh then you are missing a trick, if you had gone up the other coast you would have seen so much more, go as far as Loch Lomond and you will not be stuck for things to photograph.

Done that side as my Nan lives in Comrie. Never been up the over side hence why we plan on doing that.
