nicholab Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 http:// http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-41838556 Admittedly we have cameras looking at the door of the toilets. So we can see who’s going in and out. The school I used to work at had Toilet cctv but they also had moved to open plan toilets. I still don’t understand why kid damage toilet when we all got to go! I mean when I was at school some boys put the soap in the urinals why?
strawberry Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 This has always cropped up at every school I've ever been in. The answer is always point it at the door then they realise that all it shows is kids in and out, never the bullying and never the damage. The answer is single toilets and teacher control, controlling how many kids go in at once and how long they are there for.
E_G_R2 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 We had them in a previous school pointed at the sinks and hand dryers so that SMT could look at footage for that area only. I had to show a new SMT member how to view the system, logged onto a camera just as a pupil was about to spray paint it - bingo!!!
dry Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 There was CCTV in a shopping centre toilet that I used the other day. Literally in the room. Angled to look at the sinks but with modern field of views, I'm fairly sure the urinals would be in shot too. Talk about stagefright!
localzuk Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 We have them in our pupil toilets, pointed at the central spot where the big sink things are. Was done due to kids causing floods really!
Quatermass Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 We have them pointing at sinks/doors (we don't have urinals). Invaluable for tracing flooders, graffiti artists and absconders from lessons. And asked for by students, actually!
6Foot2 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 We are just about to deploy an in-toilet CCTV camera. I am a little concerned about the camera angle, as there is only one wall we can place the camera [to protect the camera from attack and lack of visibility of the 'facilities'] However that will also incorporate the long wall-mounted mirror which makes those same facilities visible again upon reflection. Our camera installer has a plan where the live view/recording of the mirror can be de-activated. Hope it works!..
unixman_again Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 There was CCTV in a shopping centre toilet that I used the other day. Literally in the room. Angled to look at the sinks but with modern field of views, I'm fairly sure the urinals would be in shot too. Talk about stagefright! When I was in a park in St Petersburg, the toilets had doors marked M & F (as you would expect), but the doors both opened into one big room. Also, the gym I used in Australia had communal toilets and showers. Toilets were easy - just cubicles. Showers more difficult - you either took your bathers or were broad minded. I've never understood vandalism in toilets. As has been pointed out, we all need to go sometime. Perhaps that's the answer - don't fix them and see if there is an improvement in behaviour.
6Foot2 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 ...Perhaps that's the answer - don't fix them and see if there is an improvement in behaviour. Not an option in my experience. A year 7 student who felt that they could not use the toilet [for various reasons] did not tell anyone of the need and tried to wait until they got home. They were quite ill and we had two very annoyed parents to deal with.
ShellfishClive Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 It shouldn't be allowed, that is a huge invasion of privacy, I'm guessing the school has behavioral issues but this is a step too far.
6Foot2 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 It shouldn't be allowed, that is a huge invasion of privacy... Agreed. I fought this, but it looks like I lost.
witch Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 What hasn't been mentioned is bullying - a great deal of which happens in toilets. Several local schools now have open plan toilets - that is with no wall and door containing them, so anyone walking past can see the sinks and the toilet doors. They are mixed gender as well. Seems like a good idea to me and the students don't seem to mind. There are closed in toilets around the school as well for those who can't cope but on the whole it works pretty well
ShellfishClive Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 My school back in the day was newly built mid way through as the old site burnt down (A kids dream that actually came true), the toilets there were literally just line of door like @witch said, no male or female specific toilets. Just doors, to a bog.
Quatermass Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 (edited) Bullying was one of our main concerns too (and raised by students); last thing you want is a Y7 not going all day because they're worried. But we wouldn't have cameras at all if we had open urinals like in the BBC photo - that's insane! Edited November 2, 2017 by Quatermass
synaesthesia Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Would be in two minds over this, I do agree it's an invasion of privacy however as someone has pointed out, they are a hotspot for bullying, vandalism and general antisocial behaviour. I think CCTV should be absolutely the last resort though. However, thinking out loud; it may cost a little more but rather than having CCTV monitored, how about a live feed to the outside of the toilet? That way all patrons of the facility can see what can and can not be seen.
rad Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 We have CCTV covering the wash basins only. The layout of the toilets allow for a camera to be positioned in a way that it doesnt see urinals. Yes we do have to deal with issues that this CCTV provides useful evidence for.

forkies Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 After much vandalism we have now refurbished all of our toilets into open plan, unisex toilets with no urinals, only cubicles. We have cctv covering the entire open space of the toilets but not inside the cubicles. Not had any vandalism or reports of bullying since just after this.

This is something that I think is okay, it's not "creepy" and the camera's just monitor doors, in the OP you can see a camera clearly above the urinal which is a step too far.
