So, I’ve had a letter through from Virgin Media telling me that they’re going to be putting my line rental up by £3 a month and that I should be grateful for it. Truth be told, I’m not especially but unfortunately if I want high speed Internet access, I have to go through them as I’m about 2’ too far away from the BT cabinet to use their FTTC product.

 

At work, we have just switched over to using SIP trunking for our telephony provision. That along with the VM price raise got me thinking about getting a SIP phone for home. I’ve found a company that provides IP telephony for the home for just under £10/m. That includes unlimited phone calls to land and mobile numbers. Getting rid of our phone line and just having a broadband connection provided by VM and this product would save me about £5-10 a month depending on how much we use our phone.

Has anyone here gone over to a home VOIP provider? How are you finding it?

I haven't used SIP Gate but someone I know does with work. He swears by it. I am not 100% sure but I think he uses a Cisco ATA with it.

I use Vonage for home. Get an 03 number or local one if you want, also rings my mobile too if I am out and about. Mainly use it for out going calls though.

KCom here are doing a fibre package without Landline, Ideal I thought as I never use the landline.

 

BUT, It's a pound cheaper per month and your usage goes from 750GB a month to ................................................... 30GB!

Using 3cx with SipGate SIP trunk at home. Is OK but had some issues phoning International numbers to start with as they blocked them.

 

Did try VoipFone and they seemed OK to.

I use a SIPGate trunk at home with a Cisco SPA112, no complaints it's worked fine for years.

We don't offer residential services, but many of the schools that use our hosted voice service can allow staff to take the handset/subscription home and use their home broadband. In addition a softphone client can be added to IOS or Android smartphones. We offer inclusive minutes too,

I've used Sipgate residential for about three years with no issues. I've not got a landline but having a regional number means people who won't call a mobile can still call us.

 

Top tip: Get a second number that you only direct to voicemail and give it to everyone you don't want to speak to. If a call is important they will leave a message (which gets emailed to you) and if not you don't get bothered.

After reading this thread, I've finally signed up to Sipgate Basic. Bought a Cisco SPA112 ATA, done all the configuring I can find...but...

 

I can dial out fine - everything works as it should, however - on an incoming call - the phone won't ring, I can make test calls to it, and I can hear the ring tone on the calling phone - but the voip phone doesn't ring, BUT if I pick up - the call is connected fine.

 

I've checked and rechecked the settings (as shown in sipgate help) and the regionalisation settings - but they appear to be correct - anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like you need to add a pabx master adapter inbetween the spa and your analogue phone. What phone it is? Older phones need a ringing capacitor that is incorperated into the adpater.

Am I right in thinking this can be plugged into your phone line then into your PBX to make calls over your existing landline ?

Do you mean the ATA? No. That converts a standard PSTN phone to a VOIP enabled one.

You can use an ATA with a PBX. We use the Cisco SPA112 with out PBX.

Interesting comment about the older phones - as the one I'm using to test is an ancient one - I'll see if I can borrow a newer one, just to eliminate that possible problem...

Yes, I have used a linksys SPA3102 in the past to do this.

If you have a cordless dect phone try that, as they do not need the ringing capacitor.

Thanks for that mate - plugged a cordless DECT phone in and it worked straight away - I was forced to exclaim "Bless my soul" and "Gosh!" or words to that effect.

 

I'll grab one of those adaptor jobs and try again - though why the chuffing blimey don't they tell you stuff like that in the Help files? - thank goodness for EduGeek!

Just been looking at the adaptors - but they seem to all be BT socket to rj45 - but the spa is rj11 - am I looking at the right thing?
