dosent paint 3d already cover a lot of the basic functionality? and there is an ms app called fresh paint for basic stuff

I just wish Microsoft would focus on some key important issues, such as Start Menu reliability, a proper PDF viewer, a better upgrade path and more, rather than removing Paint. I'm stunned they consider this so vital to the future of the OS.

I'm sure we can just drag the Paint exe across to the new install. I still have the XP version of Paint on my Windows 7 install, think it may take more work to function in 10.

Yes, you may use it for business, commercial, school, and government use -- the Paint.NET application is free for all of these purposes (and also for personal use). You may install it on as many systems as you'd like, although we do request and appreciate a donation to support our ongoing development costs. The main restriction is that you may not modify the Paint.NET software itself (e.g. change the name, add/remove features, "don't modify the DLL or EXE files"), and as a corollary you may not distribute modified copies of Paint.NET.

Not Dead: Microsoft Paint is coming to the Windows Store

 

In a statement to MSPoweruser, Microsoft has confirmed that the company is not killing Microsoft Paint.

 

Rather than completely killing Microsoft Paint, Redmond is instead going to bring Microsoft Paint to the Windows Store, allowing fans of the classic Paint app to install the app whenever they want. In fact, Microsoft is also going to build some of the features of the classic Paint app into the new Paint 3D app in the meantime, too.

 

MS Paint is not going away. In addition to the new 3D capabilities, many of the MS Paint features people know and love like photo editing and 2D creation are in Paint 3D – the new app for creativity, available for free with the Windows 10 Creators update. In the future, we will offer MS Paint in the Windows Store also for free and continue to provide new updates and experiences to Paint 3D so people have the best creative tools all in one place.

 

Microsoft didn’t provide us with a date for the release of Microsoft Paint on the Windows Store, but we’d imagine it’s not too far away and will likely make an appearance shortly after the release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update later this September/October.

Totally agree but it's looking highly unlikely login times will improve, am still on a lot of oldish kit without SSDs and login times are painful at best.

If your PCs have SSDs you can potentially shave around 10 seconds off of the login times by disabling the 'Startup delay'.

Startup items are the apps, shortcuts, folders, drivers, etc... that are set to run or open automatically at startup when a user signs in to Windows. Startup items can be added by either the programs or drivers installed, or manually by you.

im 90% certain that domain networks are not where ms are aiming their os its all tailored towards byod i expect domains to be depreciated in the not too distant future and move people onto intune that dosent have a perpetual license so you pay per year

im 90% certain that domain networks are not where ms are aiming their os its all tailored towards byod i expect domains to be depreciated in the not too distant future and move people onto intune that dosent have a perpetual license so you pay per year

 

This makes sense as windows 10 is SAAS so I suppose they need to make money this way to fund development, security improvements etc.

I'm not entirely sure I agree - Microsoft make a lot of revenue from server products, so I think domain join will be here for some time to come.

 

In a way you already have the flexibility of operating in a workgroup or domain, however I do agree that BYOD (maybe working with Azure), is a possibility, but Azure doesn't include any GPO type functionality at the current time.

 

In the context of Education especially, they'll always be a basic need of restricting/limiting the likes of Control Panel/Settings.

i don't think ms see it that way though. I think longer term azure will be your only option and you wont lock pcs down you will just lock down data so remote wipe policies etc. I agree theres a need to do this stuff IF its a school owned device if its a kids own then not so much if they want to fiddle with it that's their prerogative. Ms presumably do make decent money from server products but that's not the way things are heading imo we are heading towards a cloud future where on site all you will have is infrastructure devices maybe a rds for legacy software and a router. Its probably easier money for them to run their own server farms and sell services like 365/azure as you have to constantly cough up rather than once ever 3/4 years for a new server lic.

im not expecting it to happen tomorrow but I think long term it will you can already not bother having office actually installed and edit docs etc on your phone / any other device with 365 for most people a desktop/laptop is becoming something they don't need/want when an ipad etc is instant on and connect a keyboard and for most people that covers their usage case I don't think the traditional "beige box/laptop" is going to be something most people use longer term either so ms need to do cloud stuff and push people that way while they still have the base users before apple/google ensnare them in their cloud offerings

Within O365 you can restrict a user to just Exchange for example, so some restricting is already possible. I think InTune is just the tip of iceberg as it's come on heaps and will most likely replace the likes of localised GPO as we have today.

 

You still have to enrol a device (which you could argue is the equivalent of domain join) and also applies to any MDM. Being able to apply GPOs locally and have them apply in the cloud would be advantageous for all. ADConnect is a good example of this - localised AD which syncs with a cloud service (Azure).
