Setting a pupil so they can only save but not delete.

Hi.

Is there a way to set a pupils home folder so that they can do everything BUT delete.

We have a few troublesome characters who like to delete their work for some bizzare reason.

 

Ideas?

Right click a Share and choose Properties > Security Tab > Advanced button > Effective Permissions tab

 

Choose the Select button and enter a username. I don't know of a way of automating this for all users however!

the only problem I can see with doing this is that a lot of programs create temporary files (such as ms word) while you edit a document. Once it is saved the program deletes the temporary file, it would be unable to do it without the delete priv so you would end up with a load of old temporary files in the users folder.

Sounds like a nightmare to manage if you set this up - presumably they will have to come to you each time they want a file deleting, for example draft versions of coursework, at the end of a project, or once they've downloaded a photo and imported it into PowerPoint?

 

Also let's not forget the temporary / Word autosave file problem which richardp raised.

 

Of course, even if you do set this up, it won't stop them from opening their work, deleting the contents and then saving the file.

That temporary files problem is very real ... I've managed to cause it myself (oops!)... Dozens of temporary files left lying around in the half hour it took me to realise what I'd done!

Also you can end up with corrupt docs word has issues with this, it seems to fall over when it can't delete the temp file and you end up with a 2k doc with nothing in and a corrupt temp file.

What we do is kind of a 3 share technique..

1. They have their student folder (they have full control of)

2. A Dropbox share for each teacher(where they turn in work when done, they have write only access to each teacher's folder)

3. A Labs share for each teacher (these are read only - for like worksheets and such that they can fill out then save into their home folder and turn in finished in Dropbox.)

Well i havnt had a complaint from the affected pupil yet, so we'll see how it goes. .

At my old school we did this by blocking the window titled "Confirm file delete" or whatever, using Impero. If they tried to delete the window was automatically closed.

But ive never managed to get shadow copy working..

I'd get posting here to get shadow working. It's a life-saver for me. The kids and staff don't know it's there... Mrs G can magically recover stuff that they have saved (our shadows are taken at 12 noon and 6pm)

 

It's also proved once or twice that kids haven't saved properly at the end of a lesson... if you saved it in your lesson finishing at 11am, then it would be in the 12 noon shadow... AND IT ISN'T
