For me, it wasn't deleting the folders, it was ranaming them all My Documents. The desktop.ini file that gets added during the synchronize session of login.. ranmes the folder. So by disallowing he desktop.ini file it in turn stops the folder rename.

What I did to fix the issue was to install FSRM and make a file screen for the share where their home directory is mapped disallowing any ini files. That did the trick for me.

Not sure if it would work for you but I tried turning off all those GPO settings as well as making the Share itself unaavailable for Offline files (which is in the Share Management snapin) and it didn't prevent my issue. I had a problem with the my documents folder redirect changing the name of all my students shares to My Documents. What I finally ended up doing that worked was to install FSRM and make a filter screen for the share blocking any ini files to the share, worked great maybe not the cleanest solution but it works.

Also, ensure they weren't using bitlocker on their files for protection, that would possibly create the situation you are seeing.

I guess that is what I will do, I didn't know it was going to make a huge profile like that off the get-go, wish I would have checked that before rolling it out, may have to find a way to use a network-Default Profile now. Thanks a lot.
-
Well I guess that could be the issue, mine are 260MB, that is the size of the Default Profile as well though. I didn't do anything really to the profile when I created it; just added my programs and sysprep'd, sent it down and boom, giant Default Profile. And I can't copy anything over the default profile in windows 7 so I am unsure where to go from here... should I reload the image, delete tons of random stuff out of the profile and then re-image?

I found that for me , even removing my Redirected My Documents Folder didn't improve login times very much, it may have went down to 40-50 seconds from over a minute but still not tolerable.

First, and I have seen and tried multiple "solutions" for this one with no change; is the very slow logon issue for windows 7 clients logging in with local profiles through active directory. I have from 1 min - 3 min of the spinning welcome screen before kids get a desktop. I have tried the registry fix for DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout, I have a jpg as the background, I have disabled the DesktopManager whatever service all with no effect. The only solution that looks plausible is to stop remapping my documents, but should I really have to do that, surely there is a better solution? Second, I have trouble finding others with this issue but about every third or fourth student complains that after typing in their name and password, they get put back at the Press CTRL ALT DEL screen, no error or password issue displayed just flipped back to the screen for no apparant reason, they try again and go in but it is annoying for them. Anyone else seen this... fixed it? Thanks in advance.

Or just use RIS/WDS provided with 2003 and 2008 to image the machines instead of paying to use ghost. There are some sharing changes in 2008 especially dealing with NETBIOS and UAC shares being turned off by default. You may need to enable NETBIOS to do what you are wanting. Enabling UAC shares is done through a registry change: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\system\LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy 0 - build filtered token (Remote UAC enabled) 1 - build elevated token (Remote UAC disabled) By setting the DWORD entry to 1, you will be able to access the administrative shares since the remote logon token will not be filtered. This is discussed in this KB article, Error message when you try to access an administrative share on a Windows Vista-based computer from another Windows Vista-based computer that is a member of a workgroup: "Logon unsuccessful: Windows is unable to log you on". (It's for Vista but it applies.)

I am having weird problems where a webpage in GoLive randomly begins to grow. It seems to be adding spaces and carriage returns for no apparant reason whenever an image tag is added, my only current resolution is to have them start the webpage from scratch and it is fine. It wasn't a problem before when it was like one page a year but recently I've had 5 people complaining of the exact same issue. So I would really like to know what is starting this thing on the wrong path. Any ideas?

This one is kind of weird. I update all my images this summer as I normally do, current Flash, SP3, updated versions of programs for curriculum yadda yadda. So I assume everything is going ok, all the programs function kids can log in save their data to their home folder, so I image it up and out to ~180 machines. Now I have found there is a problem and here it is. You can NOT use drag and drop functionality to copy. Ouch! So my kids cant turn in their work by dragging it from their home to a teacher's Dropbox share. It doesn't give an error, the little plus sign appears when you hold it over the folder and it just goes away. Also if I log in as Admin it wont work, not even to copy from a share to my Desktop. The only work around I have is to right click the file, copy and paste then it works fine. Right click, copy , paste works mapped as a student as well but the problem is I don't allow students to right click. I have a non imaged machine in the same OU and it's drag and drop works fine, I am re-applying all updates and checking functionality after each one but was just wondering if this is something I don't know about that I can turn on/off easily or a dang weird problem.

I have a server running 10.3.9 server. Can't be updated because of picky software it is running. Things have been fine for about 2 years but starting 2 weeks ago I was having issues getting some things to launch, so I launched Server Admin to check things out and... it can't find itself. I have tried localhost, 127.0.0.1, its IP, and it's domain name all to no avail, I also tried accessing it from another Mac Server's Admin through IP and Domain name which also didnt work. It does respond to ping at all of those addresses locally and is somewhat working as it is hosting a website and FTP that are up. I have tried killing and restarting the servermgrd process which also does no good. I am unsure if I can DL the 10.3.9 update and use it to run file permissions repair or not but that is about all I can think of. Any one on edugeek that can throw me a line? Thanks in advance.

I always just have the students that find a locked one press the power button to automate a shutdown then turn it back on and log in. It really is the most simple way of doing it, requires no change in gpo and they don't even have to wait on a staff member to fix it. Over time I even have less trouble with people locking it because everyone knows how to get around it. Otherwise why couldn't you disable them locking and have them log off instead of locking? Either way it seems like more of a training issue solution than a software one.

It would have been a bit easier to figure out everything you needed if he had labeled his subs but it really appears the lion's share of what those scripts do is easily done using GPOs. I use 2003 R2 servers and XP clients and can do all of those things with OUs, GPOs, and a 30-40 line printer/drive mapping script. This all seems like a really complicated way to do what you are doing but again I don't know your environment. If you are running like NT server and 98 clients maybe you have to do things the hard way and then my recommendation would be to get to AD! If you have AD, take the time to read up on GPOs even make a new OU called test with one user in it so you can play. In the end it will be worth your time researching.

Wireless kinda makes me shudder; however, we do use it pretty effectively. We have upgraded to a Wirelees Controller system here and hardly have any issues. We have one SSID throughout the entire District, same WEP key, and no broadcast of the SSID. For your situation it, listen to the channel suggestions; as far as SSIDs it really depends on if you want the clients to access the net seamlessly or you want to tie them to a specific Access Point. If you want them tied to the carts AP then probably easiest to make different SSIDs and turn off broadcasting of the SSIDs, that way your laptops only know about the SSID you told them about. One SSID is handy if you want to be able to say use the same laptop for a conference at the high school , then go to an elementary and instantly be back on the net when in range.

I had a similar issue with a 3rd party software. I ended up solving it by copying the 2 files out to a share, then sticking them back in the windows dir and changing permissions so that System had read only. Then I made my WDS image off of that. Or if you were looking for more of a solution to get the files out, you could stick the files in netlogon and make a login script to copy tem to the %win% dir.

That is crazy! I would never allow students on a machine with even local admin rights, the kind of sharing and access rights that creates alone is scary, you do know if all domain users are local admins everywhere, all domain users can access the C$ share on any computer as long as they know a computer name? My students can not map a network drive or add/remove icons from their own Desktop and are restricted users locally but my GPO user login script for the Student UO maps 2 drives and adds 4 icons to each students desktop whenever they log on. I can post a stripped copy of my script if u need it. I think there is a place in GPO to specify Legacy scripts running with elevated permissions but I can't recall exactly.

First thing that came to mind for me knowing it's a client and not a server was to check in Device Manager on the network card and ensure it is unchecked to be controlled by power settings.

My IT Director wants me to come up with a way to constantly keep all of our teachers updated. Meaning, she has additional content she develops in a folder structure called district content; and keep general content updated, and not overwrite any of their personal my content. So I would prefer a way where I have a server where all updated content including her stuff is kept and when that is changed, it would change a checksum so that at the next logon all the clients would see a difference in checksum value and copy over the files from the server without destroying their personal content. Am I going about this wrong.. any ideas to help me along the way? I told her we could remap where it pulls the my content from to a mapped drive but she didnt like that idea as we have 3 wireless laptop areas where she does training and she wants those kept up to date also; and it would be too slow over wireless.

Couldn't you only allow the computers in the room you want to print to the printer Print permission?

What we do is kind of a 3 share technique.. 1. They have their student folder (they have full control of) 2. A Dropbox share for each teacher(where they turn in work when done, they have write only access to each teacher's folder) 3. A Labs share for each teacher (these are read only - for like worksheets and such that they can fill out then save into their home folder and turn in finished in Dropbox.)

Could just create a shortcut to the site via ip but name the shortcut something they would get and put it on their desktop. A gpo way would be to make a favorite for it in IE using its IP and direct link, but name the Favorite something easy for them to understand and only publish that favorite to the machines or users you want. Or use the lmshosts file they have been mentioning.

Lot of if's not covered here. Are you getting a light on the switch in the closet to show physical connection? Is the switch configured with MAC security? And is the Ethernet Port on the mac enabled and set to get from DHCP? Also yah always kill IPV6 on the Mac unless you know you need it.
-
also worth ipconfig /all and ensuring your getting the ip on the LAN adaptor and not wireless, 10.0 is usually a wireless default dhcp scope.

I hate when people suggest something not directly asked but Im about to do it here . Have you tried RIS?
