Fibre Cable Runs

Does anyone run their own bare fibre and then just get someone in to terminate it cutting down the cost?

Do you get normal fibre companies to terminate or someone independent? Will companies terminate own run fibre?

 

I've ran pre-terminated fibre before but a bit of an annoyance needing to drill 20-25mm holes everywhere just to get the cable gland through.

 

If i can buy the cable per m and run it myself only needing to drill a few mm hole and just get someone in to terminate it should be a bit cheaper?

 

I'd happily buy a Fusion Splicer but for the amount of times i need to run fibre, it's expensive!

Terminating is quite specialised, esp for OM3,4 so I suspect preterm is going to be the cheapest option.

If you really, really need neat holes and don't like 25mm drillbits then I'm sure someone will come out for a price.

Splicing looks pretty simple as ive had a look although seems in the past when we've had a mixture of companies using either fuson splicing with pigtails, as well as cold cure and polishing.

 

It will need to go between buildings to just don't want a massive hole on the outside if can help it.

Between buildings I'd get a pro in unless there is a suitable existing run for fibre. How about pre-terminated cables, shouldn't need bigger than a 20mm hole fore the ST connectors plus cable.

Yes splicing isn't difficult to do but I don't think you can do cold cure/polish with OM3 so it does require a bit of investment.

yes there is, there is catenary which carries existing Fibre and data cables so all in place already, ran several outdoor cables for CCTV.

It's not just cable and connector size - pre-term usually comes with a pulling sock/eye to protect all the connectors and i'm sure it was 20-25m we had to drill before.

I go out to quote on the understanding that the job will be supply and terminate but not run. Most of the companies I work with are happy for it to work like that.

Last three jobs I've done here have been OM3 custom made length pre-terminated cables. From memory a 30m 16 core cable with LC connectors was under £300

I had a quote for around £999 just to terminate fibre recently, in the end I've told our building contractors to use pre terminated fibre, 100m LC-LC OM3 4core Armored is £230 inc vat from Comms express. Last time we pulled fibre through we needed a 30mm hole

Had termination and mid run splice done for £300 on a 4 core OM3 back in Jan, we ran the fibre through and the company we used were happy to do and tested cable to give us complete length. I'd got a rough idea of length from pulling a draw rope the entire distance first so that we could ensure a smoothish path for the fibre when it was pulled. Can't say I used armoured though 300m reel of OM3 bought in and we'll be well sealing any underground sections to try to stop rodent abuse. To be fair, the 4 core OM1 or less that had been in place has been in use for goodness knows how long and the only damage to it appears to be where it has come up from the ground in the dining room with little to no protection around it (safe to say we've metal trunked the new one in)

We found a local company that would terminate our for us, we we just bought a few hundred meters on a drum and installed it around site then arranged for them to come in and splice on the 24 pigtails. Worked out much cheaper than getting the whole job contracted out, and easier to drill a 12mm hole compared to a 35mm hole in multiple external walls.

If cable break or damage then me but if connector issue the company.

 

Although if job done properly should be no issues. Only fibre issue we ever had was rodents due to a run not being armoured which now is.

Really, it totally depends on the company and how friendly you are with them. If you're on good terms and you use them all the time, then they will probably terminate for you. If you've not used them before then they probably won't bother as it won't be worth putting their name on a cable run they didn't complete end to end. Only way to find out is to ask!!

We have used companies to only splice before (although it was due to an end falling off). We paid £300 for them to come out then a massive £1 per tail, he origianlly came out to replace 2 ends, but in the end I got him to do 16 since the cost only went up by £1 per end.

 

This was 4 per end on one fibre (though we knew had a broken end), and then 4 at each end of a fiibre run that only had 2 of working, he tested all of the runs first and some had drops that were on the edge of acceptable and asked if we wanted them all doing. He got 7 of the 8 to work well within the allowed limits and gave me a read out to prove, the other one technically worked but the drop was to high to pass.

 

So companies will do it, they will test them for you as well.
