I guess breaking the rails is probably preferable to bending one or more of the 4,096 pins in the socket?

 

Neither is ideal though. :)

 

Granted, bent pins are a sod. But they're pretty easy to fix. A magnifier and a Stanley blade is usually enough.

Though rails just look a little flimsy to me. Plus there's still every chance you'll drop the cpu and bend the pins in the process of fitting it to the rails.

a £1000 cpu, and a £300+ motherboard. I wouldn't want to go near it with a Stanley knife!

I do that several times a week with Top-end xeon mobos. A bent pin is a relatively easy fix, we get loads :)

AMD Ryzen Threadripper MCM De-lidded and De-packaged

 

PC enthusiast Der8auer, with access to a Ryzen Threadripper processor, took it completely apart for science. It won't be the first time that a Threadripper HEDT processor was de-lidded (its integrated heatspreader removed), revealing that it has four "Zeppelin" 8-core dies, making it practically identical to AMD's 32-core Epyc processors; however, it's the first time that someone completely removed the dies from the package.

 

Ryzen Threadripper processors are built by completely disabling two out of four "Zeppelin" dies on an Epyc multi-chip module (MCM). Two diagonally opposite dies are disabled. The disabled dies can't be reenabled, at least not on an X399 chipset motherboard, as the Threadripper HEDT platform lacks DRAM, PCIe, and possibly even power wiring for the disabled dies.

AMD announces 2nd Gen Ryzen CPUs

 

AMD has officially taken the wraps off its 2nd Gen Ryzen processors, announcing four new SKUs that fit into price points between $199 and $329 excluding taxes.

 

There are no major architectural changes to speak of, but these are AMD’s first processors to use the new 12nm Global Foundries process, and all such chips will be referred to as having ‘Zen+’ architecture to differentiate them. You can expect largely similar specifications to first-generation parts but with higher clock speeds.

 

Starting at the top, we have the Ryzen 7 2700X, which will become the new flagship for the AM4 platform. It’s an eight-core, 16-thread (8c16t) part with a 20MB cache, a 105W TDP, and base and boost frequencies of 3.7GHz and 4.3GHz respectively. Note that this latter boost frequencies refers to the maximum boost you’ll see from a single core and is not an all-core boost rating. The Ryzen 7 2700X has an MSRP of $329 excluding tax (£299.99 including VAT here) and will ship with the new RGB-enabled Wraith Prism stock cooler.

 

The Ryzen 7 2700 serves as a lower power 8c16t part, dropping the TDP to 65W and the frequencies to 3.2GHz base and 4.1GHz maximum boost. It comes with the Wraith Spire cooler and is set to retail for $299 excluding taxes or £259.99 including VAT for the UK.

AMD Intros the Wraith Prism CPU Cooler

 

AMD unveiled its new-generation Wraith Prism CPU cooler, which will soon be available for purchase separately, launched alongside some of the higher models of its Ryzen 2000-series "Pinnacle Ridge" processors. The Wraith Prism is essentially a Wraith Max with RGB LED lighting. The cooler features two RGB LED diffusers embedded into its shroud, an outer ring at the mouth of the intake, and an inner ring along the bore of the intake framing the fan. You will be able to control the RGB LED lighting via Ryzen Master software, but it will also support software standards from motherboard vendors, such as ASUS Aura Sync, MSI Mystic Light, GIGABYTE RGB Fusion, BIOSTAR Vivid, etc. Under the shroud, the Wriath Prism features the same aluminium fin-stack heatsink as the Wriath Max. The cooler features fan-profiles for various CPU OC modes, which can be enabled via Ryzen Master. When it starts selling separately, the Wraith Prism could be priced around $49, a $5-ish premium over Wraith Max.

I have an 1800x which is 8c/16t 4Ghz, seeing that the 2700x is 4.3Ghz with the same core count makes me very interested in the 2800x when it comes along!

Get a 2700 and overclock! If it is anything like the 1700, 1700x and 1800x, then you will be getting a cheaper, lower TDP chip, which you can tweak to perform the same or slightly better than the more expensive variant.

I am tempted to, but with my fully custom hardline watercooling, including a PITA monoblock i just can't be bothered! I hardly use this one to it's max. I'll prob skip this gen and wait on the next one for a noticeable difference!

Why not upgrade to liquid nitrogen cooling and have 8 cores at 6GHz :confused: LINK

Exact reason I went from awesome custom water cooling, back to air cooling. every time I wanted to try something new I had to spend the whole evening as an aquarium technician :p

I just did it because i wanted to do it, i probably won't do it again. One of those things i wanted to do at least once, but i agree back to air cooling on my next build! Or at least an watercooled AIO ;)

32 cores (and 64 threads) in a desktop PC!!! :eek:

 

AMD unveils Threadripper 2: Up to 32 cores, 64 threads, for an enthusiast chip

 

AMD's Threadripper platform gave a hefty boost to the high-end desktop (HEDT) market: 16 cores and 32 threads using AMD's Zen architecture. Today, AMD announced the second generation of Threadripper: it's twice as big again, with up to 32 cores and 64 threads, and it uses the revised Zen+ core of the second-generation Ryzen chips.

 

The basic building blocks of Threadripper 2 are the same as the first-generation parts. Threadripper processors are multi-chip modules (MCMs) containing multiple dies and Infinity Fabric interconnects. AMD calls the basic building block of each chip a Core Complex (CCX), which has four cores, eight threads, and 8MB of level 3 cache. Each chip contains two CCXes. The first round of Threadrippers had four chips, with two of them active and two inactive, for a total of 16 cores and 32 threads. The new second-generation parts announced today make all four chips active, bringing the counts up to 32 cores and 64 threads.

 

This is the same basic layout as the company's Epyc server processors, but there are some differences. Each chip has two memory controllers. In Epyc, all four pairs of memory controllers are enabled, for a total of eight memory channels. In Threadripper 2, only two of the chips have their controllers enabled, for four memory channels total.

 

Zen+ uses a 12nm manufacturing process, generally reducing power consumption compared to the 14nm Zen, but doubling the number of chips has substantial impact. The thermal design power of the new processors is 250W, up from 180W for first-generation Threadrippers. This means that some first-generation X399 motherboards may not be able to deliver enough power for the new processors, and we're likely to see a refreshed range of motherboards to accommodate the greater demands.

I gotta ask - why would a desktop PC need that many cores/threads? Software is still struggling to use more than 1 core in many cases - games particularly!

 

The power bill running this wouldn't be pretty! Going back to original P4 power use days.

I've got a 1600w PSU here I need something to use it on - Quad Threadrippers sound like a good idea to me! :D

 

Gives you some room for overclocking also ;)

Hmmm, can I justify cashing in my season ticket to buy this?...

 

In reality - I just want Dell and HP to start selling AMD processors in their business ranges again. I would be more than happy to buy a Ryzen 2400G based Optiplex or ProDesk, and use the money savings compared to the i5 processors on more RAM, a larger SSD or even just meaning I can replace more machines within budget, meaning areas where we only use refurbs can get better machines and more of them!

Hmm refurbs are the way forward IMHO - let some other punk take the hit and the 75% loss within 2-3 years. Same reason I would NEVER buy a new car!

 

When you can get i7 3770k / 8GB machines with SSD that will last 5+ years for £250 why pay more?
