As series 11 came to a close on BBC One tonight (Sunday 9th December) the show announced that series 12 is on its way and will be returning to BBC One in early 2020.

 

Series 11 marked a brand new era for Doctor Who with Showrunner, Chris Chibnall, taking control of the TARDIS. With Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, viewers saw the Doctor and her friends travel through space and time on adventures fighting monsters and conquering battles. Series 12 will see Jodie reprise her role as the Doctor and she will once again be joined by Bradley Walsh (Graham), Mandip Gill (Yasmin) and Tosin Cole (Ryan).

 

So far, from the first eight episodes, series 11 of Doctor Who has averaged a 4-screen consolidated audience of 8.4m.

 

Jodie’s first episode as the Doctor launched with a consolidated audience of 11 million making it the second biggest drama this year across all channels, while also placing it among the top 10 programmes in 2018 so far across all channels and genres. The episode received 3.7 million requests through BBC iPlayer.

 

Speaking of the return Showrunner Chris Chibnall said “We’re off again! Well we never actually stopped - as Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends have been winning the hearts of families across the nation this autumn, we’ve been busy with a whole new set of action packed adventures for the Thirteenth Doctor. We adore making this show and have been blown away by the response from audiences, so we can’t wait to bring more scares, more monsters and more Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole to BBC One. Brilliant!”

 

Charlotte Moore, Director of Content added, “We’re delighted that the Doctor and her friends will be returning to thrill audiences in 2020. I know Chris and the whole team are already working on a whole new set of exciting adventures. In the meantime we’ve got a very special episode on New Year’s Day for everyone to enjoy.”

I liked that ep, but got annoyed at the reminder that no-one bothered to investigate the stasis pods in Ep 1. Doubly annoyed that the Xmas ep is a week later and triply annoyed at it being the only ep in 2019.

That was the best episode of the season. Hopefully they'll get a bit more time to improve the scripts for the next

But how did Graham get to beat Tim Shaw when trained soldiers didn't and who thought the planet prism prop looked like something from Blakes 7 encasing the golden snitch from Harry Potter?

 

Oh and where has Yaz gone in recent episodes? seems to have been pushed into the background.

But how did Graham get to beat Tim Shaw

 

Yeah I wasn't quite sure about that one either, I mean I get the bit where he was already significantly weakened, and from what we know Tim Shaw has no projectile or ranged weaponry, he has to kill with touch, so advancing on Graham would be a bad idea, and I also get a gunshot plasma bolt to the foot's gotta hurt in any universe.. But to get him into that chamber they would presumably have to hoik him in themselves as I can't see him getting in voluntarily, and if they were doing that, they were in range of his almost-as-cold-as-when-your-partner's-legs-touch-yours-at-night hands.

 

Aside from that, I can't say I have any real gripes with the episode. It was all very Who, Jodie's quirky-but-sometimes-kind-of-cringy-on-purpose ("Fam") Doctor is growing on me, and to be honest I don't have a whole lot negative to say about the writing this time around either. Yet again I'm like a broken record saying that Bradley Walsh absolutely nailed it, as he has been doing all season, with his solemn grief performance, though yet again we have an episode where one of the companions (Yaz again) doesn't really do a whole lot of anything.

 

I have to admit I'm a tiny bit disappointed we didn't get more from the Stenza.. Tim Shaw sets them up to be this whole warrior race, and then Angstrom mentions their systematic cleansing of Albar, and yet we've not seen a single other one of them. I was half hoping Tim Shaw would have returned home properly, rallied up the troops and gone to war against The Doctor/Earth ("The adversary has technology far beyond that which we saw last time. Finally we need not just hunt - now the Stenza will enjoy war!"), but this disappointment is fleeting and I did still very much enjoy the episode we got.

 

It's a shame it took them until the final episode to find their footing, and even moreso since the next season won't be airing until 'early 2020'. These huge gaps are really dampening interest in the show, but maybe they serve to generate hype when they relaunch? Or maybe it's just not feasible to do 11 episodes a year? I dunno. Still, it's a bit of a bummer.

Was so disappointed with that ending last night. After the first half that built up tension and a bit of a stand-off with Graham it all ended with a "perfect" resolution, no harsh decisions for the Doctor to make and the usual social justice message about "being the better man". There's just no grit or substance to this series or as someone put it on another forum "all light and no shade".

 

Shame as the first episode looked promising with the body count and dark ending with Grace being bumped off. Then the Doctor chooses that ridiculous coat and it went downhill from there

Well, it is a family show.

 

As to not making 13 episodes a year, I guess British people are just a bit lazy.

 

Due to TV licence fee being not linked to RPI it's only 81% of its 2009 value, but you'd think that drop would be covered by the 4 billion shows that follow nobodies around as they do their jobs/buy antiques, using cheap voiceover to patch over the lack of coverage of the shots they really need.

Very disappointing. No continuity - and honestly, I get that you have to suspend disbelief but the bit at the end where Aaron was being pulled out of the Tardis - and Ryan grabbing him whilst not holding on to anything, was enough to stop him falling was ridiculous

I get the emotional bits - but we've done the Ryan Graham thing, and now we have done the Ryan Aaron thing, so can that be ENOUGH please

The Dalek was split into three parts and buried across the world. When the archaeological dig found the fragment in present day UK and that fragment was activated the other two fragments activated too. After that, the two remote parts (outside of the UK) were not featured again.

The TARDIS detected a spacial shift that was the 3 parts coming together - you saw that the contents of the bag in the sewers got bigger.

 

Whilst I agree that we should keep Daddy Issues out of UK drama, I quite enjoyed the episode.
