Veeam backup and replication here too. installed on one host setup the proxy to run from the other host and it just does its stuff!

Full backups over the weekend and then incremental rest of the week,

Cost was negligible, actually less than BE and a few others that we looked at!

I've just brought Altaro following a months trial, it's far too easy to setup and just works, it seems to have all the features I need inc sandboxed restore

De-dupe and compression ratios are impressive, think we're managing around 53% across all vms.

Windows Server Backup? - I don't back up the host, just the VMs..

Easy to just reinstall windows and hyper-v role then re-point to the VHD files if data drive OK.

If complete failure, just restore the vm from the backup.

I even restored a physical server onto a VM the other day and worked fine, so does what i need.

What do you do about restoring individual files? Eg for a file server.

We use Veeam Free to back up our live system, and HV Backup to schedule the VM backups to an offsite NAS. You can then just unzip them and import without any third-party software, which may speed up Disaster Recovery.

Have you automated the Veaam Free backups somehow using scripts or something?

Yes - Veeam is the best way to backup a hyper-v system without a doubt. It's not actually very expensive in my opinion considering what it does for you - if you can't afford to spend say £1000 on backup software to ensure business continuity of your establishment then I think you really need to take a good long hard think about how you spend ICT money in my humble opinion!

Don't think you need to spend £1000 when windows server backup works just fine .... although I admit we use Backup Exec ...which is a bit dated...but I quite like hanging on to tapes for a few months just in case we need to go back in time for something.

What I do is have Windows backup the vm's from the host to a second server with the ISCSI role enabled, and then run another backup from this to a rotation of USB HDDs. I can go back about 6 months and restore an entire VM if needed doing it this way, and its all free and built in.

EDIT - Been doing it like this for about 3 years.
