Norphy Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Bear in mind that if you're using ConfigMgr to manage your desktops already, chances are that the license you've got won't cover your servers unless you're already using OpsMgr or ConfigMgr to monitor/manage them. If you are, happy days, no further licenses required. I will say that DPM sucks though, I had no end of trouble with it and ended up ditching it for a more expensive but much more reliable product later on.

I used to agree, however it has been vastly improved. I have version 2016 backing up VM's files and SQL and its working really well. All though annoying replica inconstant errors are now gone.

zoohead Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 I have been using Altaro for the last couple of years and cannot fault it for VM backup and restoration (down to file level). Their current pricing is £450 per host with unlimited VM's or £350 with for 5 VM's, but they do offer Educational discounts.

TwistedHelixis Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 if you are using a newer version of windows server then why not use windows backup, which does proper vm backup for free. I have it running at all my schools and its worked a charm since 2012r2 was realeased. If you want to spend money then Veeam is the better option.

burgemaster Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Hi, We backup full to an offsite NAS triggered by a scheduled PS script. You can also encrypt them. No bells and whistles but you can still use the console to manage your backups etc. 2

BE2015 was still doing a full backup to disk and then to tape on the Sunday afternoon, Veeam is currently doing full synthetic backups to disk, copying to tape and then copying the backups to a NAS unit elsewhere on the network and has the job finished by Saturday morning. Pete I feel your pain, backup exec used to fail once and then it would take ages to settle down again (this was 4 years ago mind), days of failed backups etc... Veeam just does its thing consistently

Used to work with no issues for weeks, then completely out of the blue throw a wobbly and fail - would take ages to work out what the issue was, which was a non issue and then it would work again for a bit. AlanD Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 (edited) Not sure what you mean by hyper V host? Do you mean just the host? Why would you do that when it's so easy just to reinstall? So I'm guessing you want to back the virtual machines. Many backup applications are VM aware and will backup all the virtual servers..but are not free, nor, depending on you budget cheap. I've always thought windows backup was pretty good and deserves a better press. It's certainly good value for money. You could get two physical hosts to backup to each other, or use a rotation of large capacity usb3 sata Drive, if you want to avoid the cost of dedicated backup server. Keep in mind that current malware, ransom ware in particular is backup aware, and often delete or cripples any backups it can find, including cloud backups if they are connected....in fact they do their best to cripple them before encrypting files, so by the time you realise there is an infection the backups have gone. This might persuade you to use off line tapes. Certainly you need to disconnect backup media..online included. Be sure to understand the data on your servers. Most of us know that sql and exchange databases need special support.But you can get caught out if some external contractor installs administration or accounting software that uses some other database not supported by your software. Usually all these have their own way to back up databases and you need to use those facilities. Simply having a copy of your data using veeam or backup exec will not enable you to recover the database. Those databases need backing up with their own tools. In fact sql has its own backup tools so you can use those rather than pay for an extra option...which often actually uses that backup facility itself. Edited April 22, 2017 by AlanD
