A new TV, but not as straightforward as it sounds.

 

I cant for the life of me decide which way to go, do I pay out extra for a 4K HDR or just get a standard HD one ?

 

Currently with Virgin Media so 90% of my stuff comes out of a Tivo box which does not support 4K ( I know the V6 box is due soon but still there's limited 4K content and its bound to be more £)

 

So what would you do and do you have any recommendations screen size 49" - 55 " price range up to £700

no specific recommendations but if you dont change your tv often may as well get an up to date one as possible so in 3-5 years its less of an issue as while 4k/hdr atm is pretty pointless in 3-5 years it probably wont be. If it has smart might be worth making sure its android as at least apps can be updated my old tv i gave to my parents the youtube app no longer works because its too old and sony haven't updated it in years (again not a deal breaker but it can be anoying)

Fair point, but you could do YT and NF with the TIVO (if you can stand the interface). BTW @TIOAOA did you know you can stick a keyboard into the rear USB on a Tivo?. I was thinking more of a HDMI stick device, though - potentially updateable if your TV manufacturer doesn't update the set's software.

 

On a more practical note, have been happy with my Samsung set bought when 1080 was still a luxury and Smart TVs were very expensive. Still going strong.

The LG 55EC930V is ridiculously lush, still the best TV I've ever sat in front of. The 4k ones are out now and cost a fortune. The old model only costs a small fortune. The contrast and depth of colour is something else.

How big is your living room??

 

Mine is tiny.....Mrs won't let me go for anything bigger than 32" - and she's probably right - anything bigger might just dominate the room too much.

 

It's annoying that there really is n't much option between 32" and 40"

 

I ditched SKY last March and went to Virgin as they had a good offer on - apart from the faster broadband I find their TIVO box compared to SKY just awful - everyone in my house wants me to switch back!

 

Personally I might see if we can get away with a Smart TV and Netflix which could perhaps save us around £700 per year!

I bought a normal 42" HD LG TV a couple of years ago, I always get a weird tearing on certain visuals (usually tends to be if a fast moving, generally a person, is close up on a screen) so dancing, football player running etc. very odd. Just be wary. The small Samsung 32" i bought myself for upstairs a few months ago has a much better picture.

As someone who fixes TVs, I'm going to say get yourself a second hand Panasonic Kurro. Blacks are properly black and the picture is amazing only the new OLED TVs give a better picture but they are expensive.

LEDs in modern TVs do not last long especially when TVs coming out of the factory are set to full brightness.

Forget smart built in. Get an Android box with the same features.

If you do buy a new LED TV, ensure you turn down the brightness or backlights and get one with a 5 year warranty, Richer Sounds provide them.

As others have said - it depends on how far away you will sit and how big a screen you are going to want. Personally I find that in our smallish room - I can't see any difference between standard and HDTV on a 37" screen.

As above - get your Smart features separately - the TV manufacturers are very poor at keeping features up to date and stuff just stops working over a fairly short time frame - at least with your own box you can update

So after a weekend of research I know what I want, I just cant afford it.

Either got to save some pennies or opt for the 49"

looks decent but if you have any retro games consoles etc it has no scart socket again maybe not an issue for you but something i wouldnt even of thought about them removing (and i wouldnt be even slightly surprised if you can get scart - hdmi adapters)
