Bit of fun - who has the oldest (working) Windows domain?

Some nice early dates comign up there. It does make me wonder if there are some very old redundant AD artifcats lurkign in those systems.

I wonder if directory archeology is a thing and how you would go about it?

The possibilites for long dead accounts to be lurking in there or references to ancient GPO's is something to get even the most curious of sysadmins digging I think.

meh. Recently weve started rebuilding domains as part of the move to win 10 so about half of my domains are now a year or so old at most and the rest will probably get restarted when they next buy a new server as they do end up so full of fixes (often for long gone software) and stuff that "seemed like a good idea at the time"

Bear in mind that Active Directory only became a thing in Windows 2000. It's possible that the actual domain is older than the timestamp that you have and that it got upgraded from NT4.

oh nt4 no policies and user manager for domains so you ended up with stuff like winsuite to lock down 95/98 boxes

At my old place our 'official' domain was launched in 2008-2009 but it had actually been in place since about Windows 2000 just to support a couple of things that wouldn't run through Novell at the time

 

Have to say I do miss some of the Novell ConsoleOne functionality!

In 2000 I was using Netware 5 and Zenworks which to this day is still IMHO the best workstation management tool ever written...

i vaguely remember netware but never used it as an admin just as an end user in college. I do remember the way it was set up you user area (which was set up per pc not user) wiped every reboot and i was copying some stuff from a dying floppy to a new one and some tool reset the pc and of course the dying floppy turned into a dead one at that point

The earliest theoretical creation date, would be February 2000 it seems, though that would be extremely keen. I'm pleased to see some old setups still going well. In terms of complexity, I should add that ours has seen many additions like Exchange and Lync/SfB, is fully up to date for running Windows 10 1607 (but not Server 2016) and has never been recovered from a backup. Amazing how much gets added in over the years - gone from 2 DCs (one for forest root, one child) to 6. Absolutely no Azure or ADFS though.

"The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed" used to drive me up the wall though with workstations! Have they fixed that for Windows 10 / Server 2016?!

30/04/2002 where I am today. Guess in was 2000 at inception, but it was 2003 when I got here and is now on 2008 R2 (I know, I know).

Ours is .Internal too. No issues that I am aware of at the moment. However, I do think now that I should have matched our website domain.

Like that when I got here and I have no idea how or why I would change it.

 

The only shame is we lost the actual real world domain name when it lapsed not long after I started (luckily it didn't have the school website associated to it) and a drop catcher picked it up - haven't been able to get it back since...

 

That's annoying! I thought we had it on a pick-up when it expired from the original drop catcher, but it seems to have changed hands now to a brokerage firm - they want $1,988.... Can't see that requisition getting past the bursar!

old ones yes usually .local new ones no they are full owned fqdn's just starting with ad.something.something
