AS for production servers, next summer will be the start of upgrading 1 or 2 file servers as wont have any detrimental effects.

I have been tasked with updating Both Hyper-V servers (from 2012r2) SQL Server (from 2008r2) and to SQL 2016 (from 2008R2) (also physical to virtual and from four instances to 1 or 2 instances) Both fileservers (from 2012R2) Both Domain controllers (from 2012R2) Both DPM servers (from 2012R2) and DPM itself from 2012R2 to 2016 pretty much next week (two-week half term here) - I might put some off til christmas. My manager has a ot of faith in either microsoft or me

They should be quite quick, although every time I deal with them it takes several days in total because they don't read my e-mails properly or reply with idiotic responses such as "your volume licensing agreement doesn't have software assurance" when it does because we have EES / OVS-ES. Dealing with MS is maddening. 1

Dealing with MS is maddening. Just call them, this is one time where it is definitely the better option, as stated by numerous people in the past here. I was sorted in 5 minutes and the keys appeared almost instantly

googlemad Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Downloading as we speak, but going to need a double sided DVD as 2016 Standard & Datacentre weighs in at 5430MB! 2016 Essentials is 4473MB. Server 2012 R2 also required a dual layer DVD Weirdly enough I can't remember the last time I actually had to do a server install other than ESX on physical hardware!
Tefters Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Love ESX but wanting to move to Hyper-V now due to their offerings of SSDir, question is can I be ass'd to turf over the whole environment (SAN, Servers and VM's) to Hyper-V... That's a lot of work...

Tefters Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 Server 2016 standard under downloads is datacenter. When you click on standard the text reads "Standard/Datacenter and something else ive never heard of..."

googlemad Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 In terms of the USB sticks, I highly recommend Rufus to create them There is a Microsoft USB tool but it doesn't seem to have been updated recently and therefore doesn't seem to fully manage to prepare the drive for booting

We've been deploying the latest versions as they become available for the past 6(?) months or more on SCCM, no need to clean install. We don't use DPM, but AFAIK that doesn't have the new patching SCCM does?

I'm going to be lazy and in place upgrade my SCCM box from 2012 R2 to 2016, if it F's up then that's what one-click Veeam restore is for! Gotta love virtualisation and not having to worry about making so many plans, preparations and endless technet reading over and over and over again.

Building fresh 2016 VMs doesn't seem to be taking any time at all. Could be down to the shiny new server hardware but seems pretty good so far. Pete
