I got two new fivers yesterday, quite unexpected really as I took out £100 from the cash machine (Which only showed increments of £10) and out came 4 £20s 1 £10 and 2 £5 :)

Rare it is for me to have a fifty, but I have had them accepted in establishments. Unfortunately these same establishments didn't accept my £27 note, but that is another story.

According to facebook, dodgy fivers have been spotted in the wild already. They pass the UV test, but don't have the holographic foil.

But, y'know, it's facebook. So take it with a pinch bucket of salt. Personally I'm not one for believing it.

 

My mum got told by a fish and chip shop worker there are also dodgy ones that they've had in. Also the current other notes have fakes that are coming out of ATM machines. Guy in the shop at the same time as my mum had his money rejected and said it came out of the bank. The worker said she's seen people take money out the cashpoint over the road, (still in hand from the ATM to the shop so no swapping) and it be fake.

Still haven't seen a new Fiver yet. With this talk about fake ones already though, a little concerning, they are meant to be harder to replicate, that was the whole point in them.

 

... I guess long live electronic currency...

Huh, if this is true, I'd suspect there's an issue with the printing of them. I can't imagine fakes will have been printed, circulated through establishments, get returned back to a bank, then make their way into ATM's yet.

Edit: Actually, wow, it's been nearly a month already? Yeah, I can see them doing the rounds by now. You'd expect ATM fillers to be a bit better on their game, though..

Well to be fair, now is the perfect time to be counterfeiting money, as people aren't familiar with the new fivers yet. Something low-tech that might not pass normally might pass now because people aren't sure what's common for dodgy cash to slip up on.

To be honest it sounds like a rumour. I can't see the banks handing out fakes as they would get them direct from the Bank Of England being so new.

I finally got one yesterday (but I rarely use cash). Ironically I was given it in a place in the UK where the known queen isn't Queen Elizabeth. Any guesses where it might have been?

I ended up with four fivers after going shopping on Saturday. Funnily enough one of them was from a fish & chip shop, but none of them are fake. I used @DaveP's app to check. :)

I got my first two new £5 notes this morning in change. In my hand they seem small and like monopoly money.

Ha ha, they are from my dads chip shop. All those came from customers not the bank.

Link: £5 notes with tiny, hidden Jane Austen engravings worth up to £50,000

 

Micro-engraver Graham Short has given a surprise to people using the new plastic fiver.

 

The 70-year-old artist has put into circulation four of the £5 notes, all of which have miniature, hidden engravings of Jane Austen on them.

 

The notes, which could be worth as much as £50,000, feature the painstakingly engraved design next to the picture of Big Ben and Winston Churchill.

 

He has also engraved quotes from 'Emma', 'Pride and Prejudice', and 'Mansfield Park' onto the notes.

 

The Austen engraving is visible to the naked eye but viewers will need a microscope to see it properly...
