I think a lot of people will be reviewing their backup strategy after seeing this as it makes it all the more real when you see sad things like this happen.

That is awful sorry to see that this is an edugeeker, I hope things can be sorted smoothly @DSapseid it sounds as if you have the bases covered.

 

I cant get over the destruction, theres literally nothing left in that building.

I live near a few schools and a couple have had quite bad fires in the roofs over the summer, they're quite under pressure to get them sorted before September. Then there was an arson attack on the school next door to my house which totally gutted the sports hall about 10 years ago, BBC Look North turning up at my doorstep for a copy of the footage the next morning was certainly a bit surreal!

Hi Everyone.

 

Wow what a 48 hours it has been!! The support from everyone on here, suppliers and on twitter has been immense. Thank you all for the offers of help and kit, i am in discussions with the trust about the plans moving forward for the next few weeks.

 

I went to site this morning for the first time and 2 days later it was still smoldering!! I have attached 5 pics that i took when i was down there, the red box that i have drawn on is the remains of my server rack!

 

Thanks again for all the messages of support.

 

Ill try and keep this updated as best as i can but my phone is getting a hammering at the minute!

What cloud backup solution are you using?

 

Im using redstor for my cloud backup. My MAT have a partnership with them and i really like the software and would recommend them to anyone. The guys there are really helpful as well. Peace of mind for me was knowing that 5 hours before the fire i had all 5 servers fully backed up.

That's great to hear! On a positive, no one was hurt, but hopefully lessons can be learned also. I find it frustrating when the press never follow up stories, such as the source of the fire in this case. Who knows, it could save a life in another school.

 

I just hope it wasn't something silly like out of date electrics which could have been well avoided. Having worked in many schools over the years, a good chunk are post war built and have horrendous electrics compared to modern standards.

I've just been standing outside Cecil Jones the fire is rumored to have started after an accident during the Re-Roofing work its spreading very quickly

"At this stage we believe the most likely cause of the fire was accidental ignition caused by a workman carrying out maintenance on the roof. There is no evidence to support online speculation that this was arson.

 

 

The first of more than sixty 999 calls made to the Sussex Control Centre was from a roofer to say a partition on the roof was alight at 07:54."

Sounds like some poor roofer had a minor lapse of concentration with major consequences- and did the right thing by ringing 999 ASAP

I had the same thing happen when I was in primary school, they built a new roof on top of the old one, and a fire started between the two layers when they were putting the felt down. Small fire broke out on the roof, fire brigade came and extinguished it, axed into the roof to investigate the cause, and unleashed a fireball, whole roof went up, lost the whole roof and caused massive water damage.

 

I hope you get back on your feet soon, it's never nice to have to deal with it.

Reading some of the comments on here has made me think. Quite sad to think what could have happened if the school was fully open.

 

I should start considering speaking to my line manager about cloud back-ups.

 

Currently we have our Back-up server in the server room which i know is not right but it was there since i started working there 3 years ago.

 

Has anyone got a disaster recovery plan for the IT Network side, if you would be able to PM me a copy so i could see how it should be done that would be great.

Mines in my head, but my colleagues and management are aware of the gist of it. :-)

 

Our site is multiple buildings with very little chance of both server room and backups going up in flame together. Backup building has sufficient IT power to host the network should it need to.

Well - I have but the garage leaks so much we are thinking of designating it as an inverted fountain and the 'tower' (3 storeys tall and no-one can find any keys to it) seems a bit dodgy

My school is quite cramped but I'm split over 3 sites with a main road between two of them and live mirrors of the backups held in all 3 sites so I'm in the theoretical boat that if all 3 sites simultaneously catch fire it's probably more serious than just a school fire (local airbase is a smouldering crater, cathedral fell over etc) but even so I was talking to my twin school yesterday about hosting each others backups via VPN (we are about 2 miles apart) to add another layer of resiliency.

 

As with everyone else, thoughts go out to DSapseid in what must be heartbreaking to see and a horrendous amount of work to recover from.
