Was thinking about buying one at some point. Would be nice to have a collection of vinyls. I haven't a clue about the players was thinking I would post on here see what advice people have and what maybe to avoid.

I can't help you except to say that a good turntable will last you a lifetime. I bought my Kenwood in the mid 1970s and it's still going strong. It gets regular use, which might help in this regard.

I recently resurrected the remains of my vinyl collection and bought a couple of bits from eBay -

A pair of Mordaunt Short MS20 desktop speakers (about £50)

A Pioneer PL400 turntable (about £65)

The turntable was in immaculate condition, had a new stylus and the original manual! Be careful with some of the cheaper USB turntables as I've heard some people complain of damage to their records because of a straight tone arm - and the fact there is no anti-skate or weight/balance setting. I can't verify these claims but there were quite a few when I initially looked at them.

I have to say I really have enjoyed listening to vinyl again - there's definitely a difference in the richness of the sound compared to streaming audio. Its also great fun browsing the 2nd hand record shops of Brighton!

PS - I already had an amp

Laser turntable - very nice. Sadly I can't afford one. I've always wanted one and some plasma speakers to go with it. My amp is built as a twin mono setup, which is why it weighs 20kgs.

If you buy a none USB turntable and buy a Phono/RCA turntable you'll also need an amplifier to plug its outputs into. Otherwise you'll get no sound.

I have a Pioneer PL570, from the 70's. Still works perfect. I use Technics amps.

I went full retro for this setup and have a Leak stero valve amp and Spendor SP2 speakers

Many years ago my brother in law went out with about £600 and instructions to buy a CD player (decent ones were just coming onto the market). He arrived back home after a visit to a local hi-fi shop with a Shure v15 III cartridge instead claiming that he wanted to hear the quality of the music and his previous (non-Shure) cartridge was too heavy for the toneam that he had at the time. My sister was not impressed!

Edit: This is the shop he went into - good to see they are still trading as lots of independents have gone under. Price =/= quality but would be nice to see (hear) the difference between a £500 setup and the one here - Make sure you are sitting down!

I disagree slightly with one point there - My Dad's early 80's Fisher MT-30R turntable (which I'm now using BTW) has a straight tone arm and in all the years it's been in use, it hasn't damaged any of his (or my) records. However, it does have the anti-skate and counter-balance which when set up properly does indeed help to prevent damage I find.

Showed my kids vinyl for the first time the other week, dug out my ancient Akai 'seperates' system, separate in that the turntable, CD player and dual tape/EQ were individual units. Sadly it didn't work as a 'system' but the turntable does. Now on the lookout for an amp to let me, and the kids, hear my vinyl collection again!

My FIL has just given me his hifi stuff as they are downsizing.

That means my mid 90's AKAI separates is going on ebay to be replaced by an early 70's Linn Sonndeck LP12 a Naim NAP 250 and a NAC 32 pre.

Unfortunately his Acoustic Research speakers have perished so I need to replace them.
