Video converting software - Can anyone recommend...

Hi

 

We are in need of some videos format converting software. We'll need it for approximately 120 workstations.

 

We need it to convert from a variety of formats to at least .AVI, .MP4, .MOV and .WMV

 

Cheap or free please.

 

Can you guys make any recommendations?

Thanks Domino. I use Handbrake myself. It's amazing, but it only outputs in MKV and MP4 AFAIK.

If you have access to Adobe CC, you can use Adobe media encoder

Be careful with freemake, I found it spams users with lots of adverts and had to remove it.

XMedia Recode, dmMediaConverter and FFCoder are good too. None of them come bundled with any junk either.

Does Freemake still add a watermark to the end of the video if it's over a certain length?

I use Super Simple Video Converter at home; no idea how easy it is to deploy and you'd need to check the license. SuperSimple Video Converter Freeware - Trusted download and reviews from SnapFiles

 

Been a while since I installed it, so if you're testing take appropriate precautions. IME free video converters often seem to be bad news malware wise.

We use Any Video Converter. Ive contacted them to make sure we are able to distribute it around the network, they are happy for us to do this.

 

If you want, you can also remove some of the video formats so you don't end up with students having lots of formats in their userareas. Ive been through the .xml file and remove everything baring mp4 and Mp3 and created them under a category *school name*

I have used FormatFactory for a few years now; it is powerful, flexible and has been a hugely useful tool. I use it to put any videos from our cameras/iPads/phones etc into formats compatible with Windows DVD Maker. I also have it setup to convert anything I need to html5 compatible video. It is very good at shrinking huge videos that are typically taken straight from cameras too.

XMR is not as polished as others, but solid and portable!

I guess in terms of encoding speed, it would help to have a product that can tap into the hardware capabilities to speed up the encoding process - Nvidia's CUDA...

I know Freemake does that, but when I last used it I had to make a few alterations so that it couldn't call-home (Firewall block and rename a file within the install folder...)

 

One great feature I've recently discovered about Handbrake is the H.264 (Intel QSV) codec.

The Intel QSV part dramatically speeds up my encoding from blu-ray mkv - I think most recent Intel CPUs have the QSV feature??

WinFF is my convertor of choice for the last few years!

The only catch is if you use Applocker / SRP you'll need to create an allow rule in a temporary folder of the user profile to allow it to create/run the scripts to call ffmpeg. Applocker it's dead easy to do, not had to create an SRP rule for it though.

Actually, there are many online apps can do the video conversion for your, such as zamzar, Acethinker Video Converter, mediaconverter, etc. They are totally free, and you don't have to download or install anything.

Not exactly a user-friendly name, but out of the 140(ish?) staff we have here, only about 4 of them need to convert videos, so they've been shown how to use it.
