I've just had a thought about this and was wondering what other people's ratios in their schools are.

 

So, what is the ratio of computers to pupils/pupils to computers in your school?

We have been asked to provide this information a number of times. Depending upon who is doing the asking, you can include all computers associated with 'teaching & learning', including staff laptops etc used in the classroom as teaching aids. On this basis we are better than 2:1. If you apply the more strict definition of those used by students we are a bit over 2:1.

 

Under BSF at my school the school vision statement contains an aspirational target of 1:1, I think I have seen a statement from the LA that suggests we should get no worse than 4:1.

 

Pay more, get less?

Well we've got about 600 kids, and about 150 machines for kids use, and then another 35 for teacher use. So if you go with the 'only kids ones' then 4:1 and the 'all T&L' would be about 3.5:1.

Hmm...

 

Primary 1.

45 student machines, 200+ kids.. 4:1

 

Primary 2.

21 student machines, 150 kids.. 7:1

 

Primary 3.

25 student machines, 120 kids.. 5:1

 

Primary 4.

25 student machines, 350 kids.. 8:1

 

Quite varied... but there's absolutely no way a primary could get anything more than 1:3 with the budgets they have.

I notice these DfES ratios keep going up. They were 1:11 and 1:7 back in 2002 for example.

 

I believe that was the point. I can't find any information on it now but I do remember there were targets for different years, each one meaning more computers to lower the ratio.

I thought there was also something along the lines of age of machine? Then it changed to usefullness? IE if it could run SIMS etc?

 

We are about 4:1, but have still got PCs that are 10 years old(about 1 suite) but staff refuse to bin them.

Its impossible to draw up a single ratio number here - depending on how you choose to count them, it's anywhere from 4:1 up to as high as 2.5:1

 

If you count every student and every curriculum PC, you end up at around 4:1 but that's a meaningless figure because Secondary students don't use the Primary PCs (although Primary use some of the Secondary ones); if you take the Primary in isolation, counting the students and only those PCs to which they have access, it's 3.3:1; calculate the Secondary based on that principle and you get 2.5:1

We are currently at 2.5:1

 

But unfortunately we will be in the control of BSF in 2 years time and they will provide us with a ratio of 5:1

 

This will be done at a cost of 1.5 million pounds (5 year contract)

 

We could provide the new school with the original ratio of 2.5:1 for 900,000 pounds over the same period.

 

Shame I was not allowed to tender for the contract!!!

At the main school i work at, we have 1:1 computers:staff and approx 1:8 computers:students... although our new govenment has proposed "a pc for every yr9-yr12 student" so we're waiting to see how that is going to affect things :D

Wow, most of you guys are lucky!

 

We have 44 computers (30 laptops and 14 PC's) which pupils can use, and just under 400 pupils I believe.

 

That puts us at just under 1:10 pupils:machines (there are about 110 computers in the school in total, but over 50% are exclusively for staff!).

 

It doesn't sound like a lot to say 44 machines for pupils, but somehow they manage to keep us running around all day every day!

 

I have been campaigning to get RMOnes in the IT suite so we can at least fit enough machines in there for 1 per child for when a class goes in there (at the mo it a min. of 2 to 1 machine! :eek: ) but so far to no avail.

 

SMT has been fed a load of BS about "wireless networking being the future" and unfortuantely, before I started the job, they bought into it and got loads of WAPs + wireless laptops (which are a BIG headache for me and the techncian!) but, funnily enough, there is not enough laptops to cover the number of pupils in any class the school has!

 

But of COURSE, every member of staff gets a laptop - it's unthinkable they wouldn't, right? Even when pupils are suffering due to having to sit and watch their 'partner' do the work in the ICT lesson, we have to spend our money buying laptops for new members of staff who don't actually really need them (oh, and there's my favourite; the staff who manage to get thier *brand new* £500 laptop stolen out of thier classroom after 1.5 weeks of having it (that really did happen last week!) )

 

Hopefully I'll have a better ratio by the end of 2009 (though with the way this school goes, there's no guarantee!)
