mikeprice Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Working in the library at the moment Freezing!!
sted Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 We have a heater on the roof which we can turn on and off however the other technician likes the office at around 30 degrees Celsius so I made the storage room my new office by removing the adjoining door just so I can sit next to the window and get some fresh air! We also have air-con but our site team likes to turn it off during winter without telling us which last time ended in the whole unit leaking everywhere because it was mid-cycle. 30 seriously thats about twice where id have it set (16-18 i find ideal)
HTCPCP Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Main site a toasty 22, other schools from stupidly cold (today) to stupidly hot (Thursday). All depends where I am
kennysarmy Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Well I've purchased a new convector heater and am now holding at a steady 22.... Not sure it's great for the schools electricity bill though!
kennysarmy Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 with the new heater and timer switch by the time I get in it's now 17-18 degrees and it warms up over the day to a lovely 22
soapyfish Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 18 degrees here set via the aircon, shame I have to sit right under the thing
kennysarmy Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 18 degrees here set via the aircon, shame I have to sit right under the thing Noisy?
clockend25 Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Not our office, but our student support bods are working away from their office this morning as it's so cold. Just been down to have a look and it's currently 4 degrees in there.
soapyfish Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 (edited) there is noise from the AC but its nothing compared to the servers ! which are right beside me about 50db according to my phone but thats hardly scientific ! Edited January 21, 2016 by soapyfish
kennysarmy Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 there is noise from the AC but its nothing compared to the servers ! which are right beside me about 50db according to my phone but thats hardly scientific ! Not staying in this job long enough to do something about it?
soapyfish Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 If I am honest there is not much that can be done the office is not big enough to partition, there are no other locations on site that could hold the servers, or the IT staff, and if we moved the servers we would need to invest significantly in re running lots and lots of cables as we are on a site with lots of standalone buildings. I have seen the "quiet racks" but they seem very expensive less effcient at cooling have a smaller internal space. I have wondered about getting health and safety involved due to the noise but I am not sure that its loud enough to warrent it. maybe someone here knows ? I have been here 10 years 9 of which this has been the situation
localzuk Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 At the moment, its 22 degrees in our office. Too warm. Have just turned off one of the 2 radiators. Its actually rare we have the heating on in here at all, the room retains heat so well!
sparkeh Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Turns out our office is the warmest room on site. People keep wandering in for nonsense chats and lingering. Thinking of charging an entrance fee
Andrew_C Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I have wondered about getting health and safety involved due to the noise but I am not sure that its loud enough to warrent it. maybe someone here knows ? The "quick and dirty" test is 'Does it make a normal level conversation difficult?' if yes, or tending towards yes, then start doing proper tests. You've only got two ears. 1
