fiza Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I'll have to have a look? Any specific vids at all? Just searching for "dance music" or "dance videos" brings up stills of bikini clad women. Not exactly P*rn but still inappropriate. 1
RichS Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Cheers, I'm going to check and see what I can see here and warn accordingly!
zx2012 Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 We fixed this by setting up Google Apps For Education and linking it to our USOs. We then altered the config in GAFE for YouTube so that only staff have complete access to the whole of YouTube. Staff now have to sign into Google to access these kind of videos though.
jonspurs Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 We're getting a weird issue here. Most staff SIGNED in to their Google Apps account can watch Youtube unfiltered - which is what we want - but there are some staff that have "Restricted Mode is enabled by your network administrator" and there is no radio button at the bottom of the screen to turn it off?! It's something to do with filtering at either LGFL or Smoothwall, as testing via mobile hotspot is fine (unfiltered with radio button option). I just don't understand why this is happening for some users and not others...

psydii Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Have they logged into a channel? click the user icon top right and make sure they are not "in a channel" Not sure what exactly is going on, a student pointed this out the other day, and we haven't had time to investigate yet.

jonspurs Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Nope, not logged into a channel but have a channel name of their own. Doesn't make a difference if they have a channel created or not.

RichS Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 On those machines, are you using lgfl dns and if so, what ones? From a case recently we had 3 options, 2 of their dns will lock down the site.

jonspurs Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Site wide we're using the moderate-restricted DNS of x.x.187.53 and x.x.187.54 but logging in as a Google Apps user allows unfiltered (for most). On the one same machine I can open two different browsers, login as different users, and one user is resticted forced on and the other is not forced on, but a radio button option for either on or off. Vice versa with users and browsers combinations it shows to stick to the account.

RichS Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 HI Jon, We use those as moderate ones, so it won't let you remove that restriction. when we use the more open ones (which we dont because safe search is removed) then we can control the restriction.
Natalie_A89 Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Is there not a way you are able to filter the restrictions using key words so you can show educational videos? I would have thought through the restrictions you would be able to block certain keywords from being searched. In theory that should mean the majority of educational videos should be ok to view.

Thanks for your reply Rich. This is the weird thing. We could remove that restriction before (by signing into Google Apps) using the current moderate DNS, even when LGFL defaulted us to severe restricted initally. I understand if ALL staff can't remove the restriction, but it's just that now recently some accounts can and some can't - again using the moderate DNS.

Thanks Natalie for your help. We can filter by keywords. Though the problem isn't that - but allowing staff to access unrestricted Youtube by signing into Google Apps. For some it works. For some it doesn't.
psydii Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 How does Google determine who is a member of staff for you?
rogerdnixon Posted March 15, 2017 Posted March 15, 2017 How does Google determine who is a member of staff for you? You set a YouTube policy in the G Suite admin console by Sub-OU. So set one policy for a staff OU and another for students. We have staff on unrestricted and can approve videos and students on restricted.

We have staff on unrestricted and can approve videos and students on restricted. Is there a guide or anything on creating a policy to achieve this? Next to the permissions section I just have "locally applied" and I have selected unrestricted access. However, when I login using a teacher account, it is still restricted with no option to change this
jonspurs Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Just an update to say my restricted mode has been magically fixed on my return after a few weeks off. Probably something at Google's end...
RLR Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Sorry to revive an old thread but we've just implemented the DNS options to make youtube moderately restricted. Working quite well but we've found some videos which are blocked on the desktop site work on the mobile site and the youtube IOS app. Anyone else encountered this?
DavR Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I can't speak for the mobile site, but the iOS app bypasses all filtering, it accesses the content via a completely different set of addresses. We removed it from all our student devices.
psydii Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 @DaveAshworth, @RLR: Can you document the exact steps required to reproduce this? What is your DNS config, are you logged in to personal or institutional accounts? Have the devices recently been outside of your firewall? What version of IOS what version of the YouTube app, etc etc.
