YouTube restricted Mode

Can you document the exact steps required to reproduce this? What is your DNS config, are you logged in to personal or institutional accounts? Have the devices recently been outside of your firewall? What version of IOS what version of the YouTube app, etc etc.

 

 

We've setup the DNS options as per https://support.google.com/a/answer/6214622?hl=en&visit_id=1-636443486884999682-85807447&rd=1

 

I've tested being logged into institutional accounts and not being logged in at all. Devices do go home so can connect from outside of the firewall. We're on the latest version of IOS and Youtube app.

 

If i click on a link to a youtube video and select open in app it will play. If I open it in browser the mobile site will load and play the video. If I then say to use the desktop site it is blocked.

We currently have our DNS set to moderately restricted and also the student accounts to get Moderate restrictions when signed into their google account from the Google Admin console.

Work on the IOS youtube when not signed into an account (so will be getting moderate restrictions from DNS).

Don't work on the IOS youtube app when signed in as a student (getting moderate restrictions from admin console).

We found youtube IOS app uses another googlevideos link which we added to our DNS settings which fixed it but also stopped all videos on all devices playing so we had to remove it.

I'm seeing the same behaviour, were on LGFL so actually have a more restrictive setting by default. The video loads in the app but not the rest of the page.

 

Workstations can't see the video unless logged in with a GAFE account that is not restricted.

Came into work today to find SWGFL had changed Youtube to restricted mode by default. Actually quite annoying.

I know it can be done via GPO but not sure if this overwrites the SWGfL settings

I dont think so, I was going through the staffproxy on a stand alone PC and it was still disabled. The setting was coming straight from SWGFL.

Just came across this myself. It was fine Monday last week so it's something they've done in the last 7 days. Really irritating and I don't even see it communicated anywhere.

I've just checked on my Windows 10 test machines and I have no video thumbnails in Edge, IE11 or Chrome... I would have tried Firefox but it appears to want to put some files somewhere that is blocked by our SRP...

Still fine on my Windows 7 machine in all of those browsers, so maybe it's not an LGFL/HTTPS related thing after all.

 

However, I set-up the DNS Conditional Forwarders originally (Dec 2015)... I think it was to allow unrestricted Youtube and that still appears to be working for us.

 

Anyway, while I'm here anybody know what's up with the thumbnails thing...?

They're looking to resolve the issue, it's an open case with SWGfL as it wasn't supposed to be enabled

@RLR Who is your ISP / Filtering provider? I think the best thing to do is to work with them to demonstrate the problem. Once they have traces of the issue the filtering providers usually have channels through which they can communicate with google/youtube product managers/developers.

It's been fixed for us now. Think they had a lot of complaints.

Yep SWGfL rolled back the change on Tuesday evening as I think lots of us called in. The engineer I spoke to implied that it was set by accident

That's interesting. The message I got implied it was made to add protection from inappropriate content. It certainly did that, as well as protecting me from appropriate content and pretty much anything interesting.

I've seen reports that YouTube have resolved the app related issue. Can anyone confirm?

I know lgfl or atomwide raised with Google and a change was made to Youtubes actual app. Could raise a case and ask who or why but I got a response from one of their guys who has worked with Google to resolve that issue.

Those would be the some of 'reports' I have seen, I'm just sounding people out as to whether the fix has been noticed by those who initially reported it.
