HarryMonkey Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 I went and saw it on NYE and thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt it was Star Wars back to it's original best. I must admit, I was wondering just when Luke was going to reappear, and felt that the last scene was drawn out a bit, however, That's just nit picking on a silly level. I wonder how long it will take in Episode VIII for it to be revealed that Ray is Luke's daughter.

Luke, as a Jedi, isn't allowed girlfriends (think Anakin) and thus can't have kids. Plus I can't see Luke dumping her on a remote planet to scavenge for herself. I mean, I guess you could explain it with protecting her, if he'd have hidden her with a strong Jedi like Jedi Master Yoda she may have been found.. Scavenging parts for food, a poor girl with no family, is a pretty good cover.. But still. I just don't see Luke doing that. It's too heartless. Enjoyed it but it felt like a reboot. I want to see the next film to get some explanations about some of the events that have occurred between episode 6 and 7. Yes please. Some explanations would be great. Especially what would happen to turn Ben Solo into Kylo Ren? Who is Snoke? (theories state he's Darth Plagueis, and I do like that idea..) Also I predict that Rey will start to turn and be lured to the Dark Side, but Finn will bring her back. That's my thoughts. Let's not forget that Finn was wielding Luke's lightsaber before Rey was. I half expected Rey to take Kylo Ren's lightsaber as her prize, and that would be the saber she'd use when she started going rogue.. Alas, she did not. Edited January 4, 2016 by Garacesh

I want to see the next film to get some explanations about some of the events that have occurred between episode 6 and 7. I suspect that some of that will be covered in spin off movies/TV shows. Seems like a good business move to leave a big empty space where there are possibly lots of Jedi in training and stuff going on which can be filled in with TV shows, films and merchandise options. I wouldn't expect too detailed an explanation in EP8 other than where Rey came from and how Luke feels responsible for Ren going nuts (i.e. enough info to advance the plot but vague enough they can come back in later and flesh it out with more films/TV shows). mthomas08 Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 After seeing more than enough posts, reviews and general feeling from people. It's making me want to see it the second time. Having a real amount of time to digest, I can't complain at what we got. Except of course Lucas was right, there are always going to be fans that complain. I spent the time watching some doc programs about Star Wars and learnt even more about the problems Lucas faced. Actually completely sums up why he did what he did in regards to the prequels. Still, the more I think about it the more I can't wait for it be released... more so than the prequels by a mile and a half. Which was always the aim. Apparently the script for the next one is even better... at least we get Rogue One to keep us occupied this Christmas till Episode 8 is out.

I agree though that using the force for mind control was a bit much for an untrained person, despite clues pointing to being Luke's daughter. i.e. Wearing Luke's helmet, the trailer with Luke saying 'the force is strong in my family etc..' Still, can't wait for the next one. Shame JJ isn't directing it, he done well here - except losing Han

I think Han dying was probably a condition put in by Harris Ford for him to appear in the movie. He has said more than once that he hates the character and having him get killed means he wont have to do it again. I heard him do a radio interview on the red carpet at the premiere and when he was asked about the film he basically said he didn't care and only did it for the money.
JHLEHS Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I finally got to watch this the other day after the wife gave birth to our Daughter on the 17th and I finished watching it and felt very disappointed by the film, I am a fan and I had a debate with my pal how poor it was I felt, though lots of the points have been raised already, The main things that I found irritated me throughout the film, is that I felt that Ren was a genuinely awful bad guy, he played that sith like a moody, emo teen, there wasn't any depth to his character or much in the way of presence when he was on screen, the film also felt very formulaic and a tongue in cheek rehash/ripoff of star wars with scaled up problems - like the star killer base replacing the death star. It also irritated me that Rey went from a scavenger nobody to a force master outgunning a clearly more powerful warrior who could have just annihilated her in the non-existent end battle to grab the lightsaber and then defeat him, that was ridiculous in its entirety for me. I still think I prefer 1,2,3 trilogy (even more so now you can get the phantom edit cut of episode one minus Jar Jar) I couldn't agree more rich_tech I wasn't a fan of the new movie.
rich_tech Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) After a second viewing, Ren having a tantrum was a main choke point for me, I get the subtext that he's not fully trained and learning the dark side too from Snoke, it just took me out of the film when he had the tantrum as it was quite childish and I can see that others felt similar, I didn't feel that Adam Driver had anywhere near the gravitas that Haydn Christians Anakin had too as a person in the film (from 2/3 not phantom menace), he was a little too "Emo/Goth" in his portrayal I thought and I felt a lot of the other main characters were underused, Finn/Rey seemed to be going nowhere and just stumbled in and about the different things going on and Han appeared from nowhere to prop the film up and confirm the canon of previous goings on. The force stuff was ok, but the Rey lightsaber thing again made me think "WTF" as Ren seemed to be a lot further along the Force path and powerful than she was to just do that, considering his exploits at the beginning of the movie, though the interrogation bit was impressive where she started reading him and turned the guard after a couple of attempts, that was enjoyable. It kept referring back to previous films, which I get, but the star killer base was a bit of a cop out I felt, just a bigger death star than previous encountered and another turkey shoot remake of return of the Jedis plot, also the bit with Luke at the end was absolutely pointless too, like a drawn out cinematic ending that went nowhere and added no suspense or intrigue.
