How does everyone manage with the daily eye strain when managing a network?

I used to wear contact lenses but eyes were getting too dry. I've gone back to my glasses and put hydrating drops in regular but still get sore eye muscles later in the day.

I do the usual and try to take breaks looking away from screen etc

Thanks

Blink a lot.. I sit in front of a screen pretty much whenever I'm not sleeping. The only times my eyes hurt or get dry is if I forget to blink! (which actually does happen).

Drink more coffee....helps with eye lubrication :D

I think you are drinking your coffee wrong.

Back on topic. Have you had your eyes checked recently, might need a different prescription. Also make sure the room you are working in is well lit. Working in a dim room staring at a bright screen all day is really bad for eye strain.

As stated above,

Lighting: Ensure daylight bulbs are in, if they're not in - speak to manglement and get some in.

Breaks: While panels no longer have the characteristic 'flicker' of CRTs, still ensure you get breaks where you're not staring at a screen.

Prescription: People's prescriptions for eyewear often change over time, and you may not notice it until you realise how clear everything seems when you get it re-done.

Your right about blinking, that is what the optician told me to do more of !

I tried yellow tinted lenses that I used for skiing but couldn't tell a benefit really.

Specsavers have some new driving glasses that stop blue light, there supposed to be good for computer work too.

I find the main issue is not blinking. I don't suffer when looking at a computer but I do when reading music - I end up with dry scratchy eyes that then water and blur.

Install F.lux on my PC and any PC I could be working on for a few hours https://justgetflux.com/

Have it to it's lowest setting all the time and definitely helps me get less headaches!

Vouch for this, I use flux at home and it helps a huge amount when your on the PC a lot but not so much at work unless you set the config manually. On it's automatic setting it will dim the brightness based on the time of day and I have found I experience less eye strain using this.

Instead of gunnars you could use F.lux i use it at work and at home and its helps a bunch. You can install it on android as well, so if you are silly like me and stay up all night on your tablet instead of sleeping at least your eyes don't hurt.

F.lux is supposed to be the business...

But I can't install it at work. Which is a big chunk of the time I'm in front of a computer.

May finally bite the bullet and buy some. They're ~£40 on Amazon [and randomly in the women's section even though they're unisex]

Proprietary shenanigans that may or may not be legit, IIRC

Plus, non-prescription Gunnars are +.25 and apparently designed for computer distance [further than reading, closer than distance]

And, they have Heroes of the Storm, MLG, Steelseries and Razer branded stuff, so I'm guessing it's legit.

Also... Shiny shiny. [At least I'm honest. :p ]

+1 for flux.

I use it at home at night!

Just installed it on work PC, have it set in night time setting all the time 3000k as we're in an office with no windows !

That's what I do makes the screen so much easier to read!

With doing photography and being a network manager most of my time is spent in front of a screen! Most the time I have my monitor brightness and contrast right down so it's just readable but if doing any image work I have to temporarily increase the brightness or it's just dark, then I can only cope with it for an hour or so before it makes my eyes strain.

People come in the office at work and say why is your monitor so dark, so I just explain I cannot work with bright screens.

Got my first pair of glasses 11 years ago, but mainly for night time driving only. I don't wear them at work. I have check ups every 2 years and they have never changed! Optician always says how surprised they are considering the amount of screen work I do!
