Dos_Box Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Just to check that all of our norther members are OK and not been flooded out although I suspect there will be some server rooms that will need draining and a good check over tomorrow! My wife was in Asda in Fulwood, Preston a few hours back and it seemed half of Lancaster was in there buying food, candles, water etc. as they now have no power at all (circa 55k houses) and it looks like there will not be power for at least a few days yet. There are also severe floods in Cumbria and places in the Scottish borders, so \i hope all you guys are well. I had several TV helicopters fly past my house on their way north this morning! So, fingers crossed that you are all ok and if you have any decent pics don't forget to post them up!
caffrey Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 My daughter is currently studying in Carlisle - luckily she decided to go visit her boyfriend in Hull earlier this week, the other stroke of luck was she changed her accommodation this September from the Old brewery residences to closer in town - She was on the top floor of this :-

MatthewL Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Cumbria has been hit the worst, Scotland took a hammering over the weekend but nothing comapred to what they have. Some bits of Newscastle/Northumberland had some localised flooding but I have a number of friends who work for the fire service up and down the country and they have been sent over to help. 3 crews from Lincolnshire as well as other areas have been tasked this morning to help.

Kinda understandable that its gonna take a bit of time to get it back up and running! The Isle of Man has had a rough time too, though my folks are ok. Oaktech Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 My cousin is in Whitehaven, fortunately on the top of a hill, but he's got a 3 bed guest house and a camping barn so he's been pretty busy. He's basically doing bed for free, breakfast at cost for as many people as he can - I think 30 at last count!

bossman Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 Currently counting the cost of last Friday night 04/12/15, Allotment fencing and brand new shed has been totally eradicated and parts of it are strewn all over the farmer's field next to the allotments, busy weekend trying to clear it all up as the winds have been pretty high along with the rain and only me and the missus as the labour, Possibly looking at a couple of grands worth of destruction but nothing life threatening!! Will post some pics when I can

SteveT Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 A trifle moist in Kendal over the weekend ..... big tidy up underway now though some streets still a bit like Venice. I wonder if the salvage rules of the sea apply to abandoned cars in floodwater? If I get a line on board and tow them to shore can I claim salvage rights? Like they say in these parts though ..... if it didn't rain a lot it wouldn't be called the "Lake" District. Instead it would be the "big-holes-in-the-ground" District. Interesting journey to work this morning!

Never seen it like that before Nope the Uni had no power either hence they shut up shop early! If you go back to its Twitter from Saturday and Sunday its all no electric so not sure what the windmill does but clearly doesn't provide power for light, heat, phones, boilers etc.... I have read that the wind can blow to strongly for these wind generators and they have to be shut down. They're set up to work at the optimum normal wind speed and risk burning out if the wind is too strong Edited December 7, 2015 by elsiegee40

I was captain of Lancaster Uni canoe club... my dad was a senior instructor and chair of Yorks and Humberside BCU, so I grew up in a boat. I loved slalom and reached the top end of Division 2 before moving south and losing the water to interest me and the budget to get north often enough to continue competing. The uni still has no power to most of its site and we are now at Tuesday, suspect some of that maybe strategic given they have shut up shop for Christmas but still poor students who need flights home etc

Indeed very sad times for them I have many friends work live and work in the town all have had such awful time with it its awful and just before Christmas as well (not that any other time would be better but still!)
