I am lead to believe Sky are actually trying to move to an internet based TV package, to allow them to reduce the costs of installations and maintaining the current satellites they use. So it wouldn't surprise me if they will encourage people to move over onto a new broadband based service.

 

If only Openreach could offer decent broadband to everyone the idea would work....

Sky Q, the latest and greatest version of Sky's satellite TV service, is launching on February 9—but it doesn't come cheap. Rather than replace the existing Sky+ HD service, Sky Q will occupy a new pricing tier above it, starting at £42 per month on top of an initial £99 setup charge. Sky+ HD currently starts at £20 per month, with the comparable "Family Bundle"—which has every channel except premium sports and movies—costing £36.

 

That £42 price and £99 setup fee only applies if you've already got a Sky Broadband, Sky Sports, or Sky Movies package. Without those, Sky Q costs £249 up front, although customers have the option of adding Sports or Movies to get the lower price when they sign up.

 

...the absolute best that Sky has to offer—the Sky Q Silver box along with every premium channel—costs an eye-watering £88.50 per month. On top of that, Sky Q requires an 18-month contract, rather than 12. Ouch.

I think the lower package is acceptable, but not the £75.

 

I might take the plunge when I can. Still expect it to have bugs.

I'm out of contract in March. Still got the first gen hd box but it's starting to fail also have the last gen with built in wireless.

 

I'm not in a sky broadband area

 

Will see what happens in March and see if I can get them to do a deal

Anyone tempted by the Sky Q upgrade as just noticed it's available today?

I was interested as I'm still running an original SkyHD box which I could really do with replacing but I'm struggling to justify the costs involved in upgrading. I only have the basic TV package with unlimited Fibre as a bolt-on currently. It's a shame all the upgrade options seem to involve an increase in the monthly subscription and that you can't just buy the box outright.

 

On the plus side there should now be plenty of of current gen SkyHD+ boxes for sale shortly

I'm tempted, apparently you can get the standard package but upgrade to the Silver box for an extra £50. I've quit doing things like the national lottery (because it's an utter rip off nowadays) so what I used to spend on that can go into sky.

 

I do need to be ok in my head tho with spending so much on TV...

im on the basic package with them, so I won't be upgrading, especially in light of the £249 fee for it which I am reading.

 

Its getting ridiculous price wise now for all TV, no wonder netflix/prime are taking over, £17 a month for movies, just so you jump the queue and see them on TV a little earlier.

If you get the Family package @ £36, then it may be worth the upgrade. £6 extra /mnth for SkyQ or £18 /mnth for SkyQ Silver, but you get a free multi-room(SkyQmini) box for that (so really only an extra £12). Its really whether you want to new tech. the old boxes are getting past it now, the interface in clunky and frustrating.

 

Also if you get the Sky Q Silver, and have crappy wifi, the Minis acts as a repeater using powerline , bonus

 

Edit:if you're an existing customer you pay £99 set up, and and extra £50 if you're just a BB customer/.

I would be tempted but as with every new sky box I would wait until the second generation one in a year. So far all first gen boxes of every new type have had long term issues. Also the whole idea you rent the box rather than own it annoys me when it's this pricey.

But Sky will fix for free if there is a fault rather than leaving you with an expensive box to fix.

 

It's possibly just capacitor issues that cause the SKY boxes to fail, well it was for the couple I've repaired.

That is a plus point, I have just found the gremlins have been fixed after the first gen normally.

Yes, very true with most tech, it seems a lot of companies nowadays use the customer as the beta tester.

That's what's irking me really. I have my phone/internet and TV through Sky and with the most basic TV package plus unlimited fibre broadband my monthly bill is still around £70. I think if I added Sky Q it would be around £100 which is a ludicrous amount of money really even if it does include internet and phone IMO.

 

I get that Sky need to move things forward, as streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime must be seriously eating into their customer base, but skyQ is sounding fearsomely expensive for what it is. Especially when you look at what you can do with a £30 chromecast and a £6 montly subscription to something like Netflix!

 

As others have said I'd want to see what the reviews are like and get some feedback before ordering.

Admit, part of the reason I wanted it was to replace the craptastic router sky provide with their ASDL connection (it's a 2.4ghz only N router with sod all range) but given the start up costs of this I might just buy a unifi point instead!
