I just can't justify paying over a grand to watch some sports and films in what should be a standard quality, when you add up all the costs for mobile telephone, broadband and other essentials. It's just too high! :(

Found out on Monday in Cardiff, you can't have Sky Q unless your a sky broadband customer, so its a no go for me, not getting rid of my 200mb VM cable for that, thats a cert here.

 

Personally I find it questionable needing their broadband as a stipulation to having a product for TV.

Thats great when they do decide that, it put me and the wife off big time the other day, I would never use sky as a broadband provider.

 

Thinking of cancelling sky now, as we only watch live TV for about 1/2 hours a night if that here, streaming could get around everything with our viewing habits from the trial we are doing at the moment.

Sorry to bump this up, just wondered if anyone had got Q yet?

 

Its being installed now, from late Feb, so a few should have it now.

 

Over on the Sky forum, some like it, some hate it.:lurk: If you send it back to Sky, you can't get it again for a whole year.

It's probably not going to be widespread until they allow non sky broadband users in, which was touted as April, probably become a bit more widespread then, it looked impressive on the display in the local shopping centre when he was demonstrating it to us

I don't know anyone personally who's bought it yet. Everyone I've spoken to has baulked when they found out about the installation fee, the increased monthly cost and the fact you have to effectively lease the hardware. My interest in it has kind of waned the more I've heard about it TBH. To me if you have a fast fibre internet connection and/or can get a reasonable 4G connection when out and about I don't see the need to record broadcast TV when it can be streamed directly. If I can stream all this content from a vast variety of internet services (Netflix, Amazon, Spotify, YouTube) why would I want an expensive solution in my home that only works with Sky's own closed proprietary platform?

 

I'd prefer if Sky spent more effort focussing on providing web-based content and building an open platform around that rather than solutions which require its own closed-platform proprietary hardware. Why can't I just go and sign up to sky like I currently do with Netflix or their ilk? Requiring customer to purchase a satellite dish and bespoke hardware seems completely unnecessary in 2016. Sky should go a step further than simply allowing non Sky broadband customers to join and actively be trying to get people without any bespoke Sky hardware to sign up. I think increased competition from internet based TV companies is going to force them down this path in the near future anyway whether they want it to happen or not.

They kinda already have this with NowTV though and I don't know why more people don't use it. We buy the boxes and passes at home and once you sell the box we are paying around £2 a month for Sky entertainment which includes Sky1,Sky Atlantic which we can watch live and on demand and on 2 devices at once.

 

We also have youview and by switching from sky TV to BT + Now TV we have saved over £40 a month a lost no channels at all!

My Sky Q is free (after one off costs, which was £49 because I have Sports and BB with Sky), because I have Sports channels. Will go up when I get rid, but still saving me money because sports costs me 1 good kidney per month currently ;)

Of course! At the time we brought a NowTv box + a 6 month entertianment pass for £20

 

I sold the box on for £10 (with PLEX installed always sell the boxes with PLEX they shift almost instantly that way) and then paid £10 for 6 months Sky TV allowing me to watch live and on demand! Is it any good? lots over on the Sky forums saying they are sending it back, over a few bugs, pointless in my opinion, Sky are working on fixes.

 

I have "classic" Sky HD with multiroom. So I upgraded, I would only have one main box, as I expected, the wireless link between boxes is failing for many, think I will stick with cable connections when I get it.

It seems fine to me. Have not used a lot yet. You get 5 tuners so watch 5, watch 4 record one, etc. You can pay for additional boxes as one off costs. Easy to transfer recordings to ipad (ok not new ) and watch live tv to I think.

 

I'm liking it so far. Also the secondary boxes act as WiFi repeaters to expand your WiFi..

Also I don't have the cables all going though my house right now for multiroom so that is another bonus freedom to move the boxes. I intend to use a hdmi splitter upstairs to supply all the bedrooms (and my office ;))

just had a email saying Sky q is available on non sky broadband lines...

 

Fully working or stripped down? the way I understood it, the Main box would work, but you'd have to have SkyBB for the remote boxes and some of the other features to work.
