Recommended IT Recycling/Disposal Companies

Possibly been asked many times before, can anyone recommend any IT recycling companies who will come and collect equipment for either free or as cheap as possible? I have a very demanding school to go to later on who want rid of a few machines and also want me to securely wipe them before they'll let them go. The only secure wiping method I have at my disposal is DBAN which takes hours and hours to complete.

A hammer and chisel to the disk (with eye protection) is also pretty secure, as is a proper industrial shredder! PRM Green Tech do our collections and disk disposals when needed.

+1 for PRM Greentech. Though you need quite a lot of 'qualifying' items for them to come and collect.

Just had a quick look at them and it looks like you need 30 items, the most I think I can stretch it to that they have to get rid of is about 12

I could do that but I'd probably get fired for doing it as I haven't had the proper training . However, I could tell the school they could do it and once that's done they could just take it to their nearest tip surely?

PRM are pretty accomodating, if you were to call them and explain the situation they might be able to help you for anyway.

Worth a try! But they refused on 2 occasions to collect items, but did manage to sweet talk them a few weeks ago to collect my stuff. A word of warning, they wont collect IWB's as they say they need to pay for them to be recycled.

Yeah, they might not do it for free. I had 8 servers at my last place that I needed gone right then. Our local recyclers wanted £150 +VAT to dispose of them, but PRM did me a deal and tagged me onto someone elses collection down the road (I say down the road, they were in Southampton) the next day and they took them away for £50 inc vat.

I think you are supposed to get an official disposal certificate to prove that you aren't just chucking it over a fence or something

 

Mind you I have got one in 2 schools now and given it to the Site Manager who looked interested as he had never seen one before!

The school in question is near Tewkesbury, about half an hour from Worcester City Centre.

 

Just had a quick look and their website says completely free and they'll collect from anywhere in the UK. Could be EXACTLY what I'm after!

Hope they are suitable for you, they have always provided a great service to us and take anything vaguely IT related, iwb, projectors, servers, cabling, old laptop trolleys etc.

I can highly recommend IT Disposal | LCWS Computer Recycling Ive used them 4 times in the past 8 years. They take anything that us school IT types get dumped upon us for Free, provide certification to comply with the DPA and WEEE Directive. I'd recommend buying a copy of Drive Erase Pro if it's still available - I did have the box set which comes with the programme on a blue coloured DVD and a red coloured DVD which you boot the PC to and it will wipe it quickly and securely from there - like a muppet I left my red disk in a PC I moved on with them. Since then I have actually physically removed the hard disks, dismantled them and hammered a few holes into the platters. Giving the residue to LCWS when they collected the kit they were delighted that I'd done that and did mention that they had needed to raise an invoice against a school which had left their hard disks fully loaded in the past.

Stone pick mine up. Done it twice so far for us and they turn up early armed with paperwork. All goes very well.

I use Stone for all our recycling as well, have done since I started in the job, excellent service and free if your over 25 items - check their website.

 

You get disposal certificates too and can pay for optional things like certificates showing disk destruction
