gtg93 Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 So my aging (4/5 YO) Acer Aspire 5750 is starting to run slow. It's on Win10, has 4GB RAM and a Dual Core CPU... I assumed it was to due with Win10 as I did an upgrade as appose to a clean install, but after wiping it and starting again it would appear not - It seems the HDD is possibly failing. I don't use the laptop for much - mainly at work for emails, RDPing into servers and basic web browsing, so the spec should be able to handle everything I do on there. My dilemma is this - do I upgrade to a new laptop, or just bang an new drive in it? (Would an SSD be worthwhile on my hardware?)

eyetea Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Whacked an SSD into my old laptop that was slow to the point of being unusable. It's obviously not a super speedy machine now but it is perfectly usable, I no longer wish to throw it out the window!
dry Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Check between the fan and heatsink for dust, and reapply thermal paste on the CPU if you haven't already! Stick an SSD in and you'll have a much better laptop.

Always found Acer to be pretty reliable myself... Just on the times they do fail, their warranty support is shockingly bad! Don't really NEED it for work, just choose to use it in this way... Hence I don't get one supplied.
LosOjos Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I needed a "new" laptop [read: I needed a laptop, didn't have one previously] and opted to buy a second hand Thinkpad T420. I managed to get the T420 (with the 1600x900 screen, NVIDIA GPU, 3G modem and dual core i5) for £150, then put in a 256GB Samsung SSD I got for about £90. Total cost £240 and it kicks the rear end out of anything you can buy new for less than £500. So yeah, put an SSD in it 1
john Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I put a basic SSD into my Samsung NC10 and that made it more usable on Win 7 again so I can live with it for basic tasks 1
pebkac10 Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I would go with ssd, if you don't use it for much its not worth forking out the cost for a new laptop. and as others have said when you do get a new one you will have an ssd you can put in it

comrade Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 SSD. Mechanical drives (for home equipment) will die once the price of SSD is acceptable. Maybe another 5/10 years for server drives.
