Server Room Monitoring

Just wondered what people use if anything to monitor anything other than Temperature in their server room, i.e Water?

 

We've had a few occasions over the years where the air con has failed due to blocked drainage or other fault resulting in a flooded floor, only to be found when going in the server room.

 

Anyone come across anything other than the ServersCheck hardware?

 

Use server / ups software for temperature monitoring and alerting in the event of air con failure for temperature rise.

lol both our server rooms are contained and what if it happened over the weekend?!

There would be water entering the corridor from under the door and the caretaker would phone me.

 

Joking aside, I have a Ubiquiti mFi running temperature and humidity monitoring. In terms of water, all my equipment is 6 inches off the floor, fingers crossed!

Wasn't there a rack mounted sensor kit available a few years back where you could plug in modules such as temp, humidity etc?

Trying to remember the name of it.

Our UPS has a sensor which tells us a few bits and bobs which is quite useful. It may be worth seeing if your UPS supports a similar type of thing since most UPS's are pretty good with that type of data now days.

We have an APC PDU that connects to our network send both Temperature and Humidity warnings from connected Sensors.

 

As the basement has flooded before we have raised floor with Water sensors underneath.

 

Was quite easy to setup I think it cost around £400. We do have a large Server Room but is in basement and I might not go in for a few days. The plan would be to get one for each comms room eventually .

I use a Jacarta Interseptor.

 

It can measure a wide variety of things using various plugins, but I measure temperature, humidity, voltage and whether or not water is present.

 

For a real belt and braces approach I interrogate it via SNMP with PRTG (I can then set very detailed alarm conditions).

 

It works excellently and I'm very pleased with it.

 

An added bonus is it's made in the UK.

An environmental monitor with a water leak detection rope sensor it what you need.

We use an AVTECH Room Alert 24E (we don't need such a big unit, but it was the only size available when we bought it).

 

You can get all sorts of sensors for it. We have a flood sensor (rope sensor that goes around the edge of the room), temperature sensor , humidity sensor, and light sensor. There's also sound, power, air flow, smoke, motion, relay, room entry, fuel and water level sensors for it too, should you need them!

 

I use Open Xtra for this stuff - as they know what they're doing with it all. Environment Monitors | Openxtra

About 18 months ago in a storm we had water rapidly rising in the playground and it looked like it was on its way through school. This prompted me to find an old cabinet from a classroom and my server (and everything connected) is now 75cm off the floor If the water's higher than that it'll probably make the local news!

Yep we use the Climate CM-2 as well, it has a water sensor add-on I believe

It took me 7 years go get my own server room and air con, I am counting my lucky stars enough as it is. I don't do anything out of hours, just hope.

We've got a very cheap plugin device that monitors power and temperature. Being cheap (and having marginal mobile signal in the server room) it doesn't work very well. It has however alerted in the past when the aircon packed in. I was able to remote in and switch a good deal of equipment off bringing the heat levels down to something slightly less tropical!

 

I've been looking at building my own based on an arduino. Add a temperature/humidity sensor, door contact sensor, voltage or ampere sensor and a wifi or network adapter and I think I could do it for less than £40 with a decent enclosure.

Same here - my office houses most of the network hardware. The BDC is in the site manager's office so between us we'd know pretty quickly if something was going on...
